Here are some thoughts - although I am still wading through myself.
Think of your marketing platform as an actual structure and each plank and activity or source for building that platform.
1. Speaking - you could increase this plank by videoing and/or recording the events and then posting snippets on youtube. Be sure to include a link to your website with your book.
2. Book signings - wouldn't it be great to have a twitter feed going DURING a book signing. You could update every so often and maybe even offer giveaways to anyone that mentions one of your tweets.
Those are the two things that you mentions and my thoughts on making more of them. Now on to what you didn't mention . . . social media, website, guest blogs, blog tours, book launch parties (in person and online).
What I am learning - by building each of these elements, I can utilize them in a rotating fashion so that I am continually promoting without saturating a location. So on monday I will tweet about my book but the rest of the week I will tweet and retweet other valuable information to my followers (and the same with facebook and linked in). Meanwhile, once a month I can include information about my speaking engagements, recordings, and launches in my email newsletters from my websites.
Basically, there is a LOT to marketing, but the right balance can help make it a little easier. One step at a time, just like a real structure, and then build on that step to the next one.
