Apple and Samsung Came Close to A Truce in the Patent Wars

Published on:

?Apple and Samsung are reportedly in talks to try and settle their long-running patent disputes, but a negotiated settlement appears to be a distant prospect.

The talks, which have been held in secret, started last Summer when Apple secured a victory in the tit-for-tat patent wars between the two tech giants.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal said that the two companies even appeared to come close to a settlement in February before talks cooled off.

The talks are still carrying on, although there is no indication that they are close to a conclusion.

Samsung is understood to have been pushing for a broad agreement between the two companies that would see them cross license each other's portfolio and settle all outstanding claims. The settlement would be similar to those often struck between patent feuding companies.

The move towards a settlement under Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook marks another step away from how Apple was run under Steve Jobs, who famously vowed to try and destroy the Android OS and refused to settle in patent lawsuits.

Pressure to settle may also come from US politicians who are increasingly concerned about how the patent wars are affecting the technology industry as a whole.
