Mammograms: For 1 life saved, 3 women overtreated
LONDON (AP) ? Breast cancer screening for women over 50 saves lives, an independent panel in Britain has concluded, confirming findings in U.S. and other studies.
But that screening comes with a cost: The review found that for every life saved, roughly three other women were overdiagnosed, meaning they were unnecessarily treated for a cancer that would never have threatened their lives.
The expert panel was commissioned by Cancer Research U.K. and Britain's department of health and analyzed evidence from 11 trials in Canada, Sweden, the U.K. and the U.S.
In Britain, mammograms are usually offered to women aged 50 to 70 every three years as part of the state-funded breast cancer screening program.
Scientists said the British program saves about 1,300 women every year from dying of breast cancer while about 4,000 women are overdiagnosed. By that term, experts mean women treated for cancers that grow too slowly to ever put their lives at risk. This is different from another screening problem: false alarms, which occur when suspicious mammograms lead to biopsies and follow-up tests to rule out cancers that were not present. The study did not look at the false alarm rate.
"It's clear that screening saves lives," said Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research U.K. "But some cancers will be treated that would never have caused any harm and unfortunately, we can't yet tell which cancers are harmful and which are not."
Each year, more than 300,000 women aged 50 to 52 are offered a mammogram through the British program. During the next 20 years of screening every three years, 1 percent of them will get unnecessary treatment such as chemotherapy, surgery or radiation for a breast cancer that wouldn't ever be dangerous. The review was published online Tuesday in the Lancet journal.
Some critics said the review was a step in the right direction.
"Cancer charities and public health authorities have been misleading women for the past two decades by giving too rosy a picture of the benefits," said Karsten Jorgensen, a researcher at the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen who has previously published papers on overdiagnosis.
"It's important they have at least acknowledged screening causes substantial harms," he said, adding that countries should now re-evaluate their own breast cancer programs.
In the U.S., a government-appointed task force of experts recommends women at average risk of cancer get mammograms every two years starting at age 50. But the American Cancer Society and other groups advise women to get annual mammograms starting at age 40.
In recent years, the British breast screening program has been slammed for focusing on the benefits of mammograms and downplaying the risks.
Maggie Wilcox, a breast cancer survivor and member of the expert panel, said the current information on mammograms given to British women was inadequate.
"I went into (screening) blindly without knowing about the possibility of overdiagnosis," said Wilcox, 70, who had a mastectomy several years ago. "I just thought, 'it's good for you, so you do it.'"
Knowing what she knows now about the problem of overtreatment, Wilcox says she still would have chosen to get screened. "But I would have wanted to know enough to make an informed choice for myself."

UBS to slash 10,000 jobs in fixed income retreat
ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS unveiled plans on Tuesday to wind down its fixed income business and fire 10,000 bankers, as it adapts to tougher capital rules that make it more difficult for investment banks to turn a profit since the financial crisis.
Zurich-based UBS will focus on its private bank and a smaller investment bank, ditching much of the trading business that ran up $50 billion in losses in the financial crisis, as well as a $2.3 billion hit, which trader Kweku Adoboli, now on trial on charges of fraud and false accounting, is accused of running up.
Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti, a former Merrill Lynch and UniCredit banker who took over after the Adoboli affair last year, is leading the three-year overhaul, which is aimed at saving 3.4 billion Swiss francs ($3.6 billion), on top of existing spending cuts of 2 billion francs.
Former investment bank co-head Carsten Kengeter will lead the isolation and winding down of its fixed-income activities that are no longer profitable as a result of tougher capital rules on riskier business introduced after the crisis.
The remaining investment bank - equities, foreign exchange trading, corporate advice, and precious metals trading - will be run by Andrea Orcel, a recent Ermotti hire from Bank of America who had co-ran the unit with Kengeter until Tuesday.
"This decision has been hard but it is necessary to create a UBS that is fit for the future," Ermotti said. "The business model we are creating will be unique in the banking industry."
The measures translate to a 15 percent staff cut, taking UBS's overall staff to 54,000, from 63,745 now, already down from a 2007 peak of 83,500 as banks have shed tens of thousands of jobs globally since the financial crisis of 2008.
Of the job cuts, 2,000 will be front-office investment banking staff, the revenue generators. About 2,500 positions will go in Switzerland, slightly more than that in the United States, and the rest in Britain, Ermotti said.
UBS stopped dozens of fixed income traders from entering its London offices on Tuesday, a source at the bank said.
Some staff turned up to work to find their employee cards no longer worked at the turnstile and were then escorted to human resources, according to various sources with knowledge of the situation.
Once at human resources, they received their personal items in a bag with a letter saying they would have two weeks paid leave, after which they were to return to pick up their redundancy package, the sources said.
A smaller investment bank will leave UBS focused on its private bank, which looks after the affairs of the wealthy. With 1.6 trillion francs in assets, it is the second-largest operation of its kind in the world after Bank of America.
UBS shares, which soared 7.3 percent on Monday in anticipation of the announcement, were up another 5 percent at 13.79 francs by 1050 GMT in exceptionally heavy trading, their highest since July 2011, compared with a 0.7 percent rise for the European bank sector index.
UBS, which took a government bailout in 2008 after more than $50 billion in mortgage losses, is effectively admitting that an attempt to crack the fixed-income big league has failed.
Deutsche Bank said on Tuesday it hopes to benefit from the UBS cuts as its investment bank delivered record third-quarter sales and trading revenue.
But some analysts said other banks might be forced to follow suit even though the UBS strategy was risky.
"While other banks like CS are still sticking to their investment banks, which do not even earn their cost of equity, UBS takes the lead in responding adequately to investors' demands," said Sarasin analyst Rainer Skierka.
Credit Suisse said last week it was also cutting more costs to boost its profits and capital but did not announce the same kind of radical restructuring as UBS. [ID:nL5E8LP122]
INVESTMENT BANK LOSSES
After settling a damaging U.S. tax probe in 2009, UBS had just started to rebuild client confidence when the $2.3 billion trading scandal surfaced in September last year.
Adoboli, who worked on the bank's London-based exchange-traded equities funds desk, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud and four of false accounting.
Ermotti's overhaul comes against a backdrop of far tougher regulation on riskier securities trading activities, and represents a return to advisory roots stemming from UBS's purchase of Warburg, a British merchant bank, in 1995.
The bank aims to pay out more than 50 percent of profits to shareholders from 2015, after paying its first post-crisis dividend last year, a modest 0.10 francs a share. It has put away funds in the third quarter for an unspecified dividend this year, financial chief Tom Naratil told journalists.
The costs related to the investment banking split will also lead to a fourth-quarter and full-year loss, when taken together with charges on the bank's own debt, UBS said.
The private bank also faces challenges, with profits falling as Swiss banking secrecy is weakened by repeated demands from foreign governments determined to recoup tax on undeclared funds held in offshore accounts.
However, the unit secured 7.7 billion francs in net new money from clients in the third quarter, which represents the highest result in a third quarter - typically a slow one for the business due to summer holidays - in five years.
UBS swung to a third-quarter net loss of 2.172 billion francs, hit by the restructuring charges and 863 million francs written off the value of its own debt. Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast a net profit of 457 million francs.
UBS is aiming to reduce risk-weighted assets to below 200 billion francs by the end of 2017, from 301 billion currently. Of this the investment bank will account for roughly 70 billion francs, less than half of what it accounts for today.

Acupuncture may ease cancer-related fatigue
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Acupuncture may help relieve fatigue in women who've had breast cancer, a new UK study suggests.
Researchers found that women who attended six weekly acupuncture sessions had greater improvements in fatigue as well as anxiety, depression and quality of life, compared to those who only received educational materials.
But that still doesn't prove it was the needles, themselves, that boosted women's energy levels, they said. And one cancer and alternative medicine researcher not part of the study team said the acupuncture group only showed a "modest improvement in fatigue - it was not a very remarkable, strong effect."
Still, acupuncture could be "well worth a try" for some people, Dr. Amit Sood, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Reuters Health.
"Fatigue is the most common symptom for all cancer patients," said Carol Enderlin, who has studied that topic at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
She said cancer and cancer treatments can cause chronic pain, psychological stress and anemia - a decrease in healthy red blood cells - all of which contribute to fatigue. In addition, people who are nauseated after chemo might not be getting the most nutritious diet for maintaining energy levels.
Enderlin, who also wasn't involved in the new study, said acupuncture may help as an add-on therapy for women who've had their fatigue checked out by a doctor and tinkered with their physical activity and diet - but are still frequently tired.
Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life.
For the new research, Alexander Molassiotis from the University of Manchester and his colleagues tracked 227 women with moderate or severe cancer-related fatigue treated with acupuncture and another 75 fatigued women who didn't get acupuncture.
The women had all received chemotherapy for breast cancer in the five years before the study, and most had felt chronically tired for a year or more. Participants were given a booklet about cancer-related fatigue when they started the study.
The researchers found that after six weeks, general fatigue had dropped by almost four points on a 0-20 scale among women who had acupuncture, compared to a less than one-point decline in the comparison group. That is "mild to modest" improvement, according to Sood - not enough to allow someone who is stuck in bed to start walking, but maybe enough to get people who are too tired to exercise to start doing some activity.
Anxiety and depression scores, measured from 0-21, dropped by two additional points post-acupuncture, compared to scores in women given educational materials only. Emotional and physical well-being got a greater boost with acupuncture therapy as well, Molassiotis's team found.
The researchers couldn't tell how much of that benefit might have been due to the "placebo effect" - women who felt better because they expected to benefit from acupuncture.
In an ideal trial, participants would get either real or fake acupuncture, without knowing which. But it's very hard to design a convincing but ineffective fake acupuncture treatment to use for comparison, researchers noted.
According to an editorial published with the study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, close to one-third of cancer patients have persistent fatigue that may continue for years after treatment. Doctors typically encourage moderate exercise and talk therapy to improve their energy, wrote psychologist Julienne Bower, from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Still, she added, it's unclear how well any therapies work over the long term in people with severe fatigue.
Enderlin said people who've been treated for cancer should make sure they're not at high risk of bleeding or infection before considering acupuncture for fatigue.
But if they're medically cleared, she said the alternative therapy "looks really intriguing."
Enderlin recommended "maintaining activity to tolerance, unless there are other problems with that, good nutrition, getting adequate sleep, and if the fatigue continues, considering there might be an alternative that could complement (those things)."

Dressing James Bond ? Zoomer Magazine | Canada's Boomer ...
When it comes to styling the world?s most fashionable film hero ? and the cast of friends, villains, and lovers that accompany him ? Lindy Hemming and Bronwyn Cosgrave are just the ladies to talk to. Co-curators of the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibit at Toronto?s TIFF Bell Lightbox, Hemming and Cosgrave possess an intimate knowledge of the famed spy: Hemming served as costume designer for five Bond films from 1995 to 2006, while Cosgrave is a noted fashion-design writer and broadcaster. They recently sat down with Zoomer?s Mike Crisolago to discuss the job of designing 007.
MIKE CRISOLAGO: When you think about James Bond?s style the first word that comes to my mind is ?iconic.?
LINDY HEMMING: Isn?t it the actor inside the clothes that makes that happen? I think the thing is it?s that chemistry. This is what costume design is really. It?s finding the chemistry, finding the way of bringing out the actor?s own charm, sexuality, physicality and acting ? character ? and using clothes to help them explore that and to help the audience who?s looking at the actor as the character to understand more about who he is. In the case of Bond ? your job is to keep him sophisticated, elegant, not fashionably over the top, because then he wouldn?t be able to be a spy. And also, I think you have to make him look like the clothes he?s wearing are his clothes. He has to fit in them and he has to feel comfortable in them and move physically and beautifully in them.
BRONWYN COSGRAVE: The interesting thing about Bond?s style is that it has remained consistent. I mean, the original conduit-cut suit by Anthony Sinclair that Sean Connery wore in Dr. No really was the benchmark. Every tailor that dressed a Bond looked at those suits ? at the tuxedo and his suit ? as a sartorial reference point ? I really do think he has maintained this classic air of masculinity and also been a fashion figure who hasn?t been afraid to take risks with his styles ? say, wear a pink tie in Diamonds Are Forever (with) a cream-coloured suit ? The costume designers that I?ve interviewed, and with Lindy, they would always get the look books of designers for the season ahead and look and say, ?Okay, what can he or she wear that?s going to push it forward?? Because films come out two years after they?re made, you?re always looking to the future.
MC: You must have felt quite a bit of pressure, Lindy, when you took on the role of Bond?s costume designer.
LH: Whenever you do a franchise or whenever you do an iconic person, there?s a huge pressure to the fans. You know, I was doing the last three Batman [films] and the pressure to get that right is the same as the pressure to get Bond right. It?s huge.
MC: You?ve mentioned before that it?s not just Bond?s style you?re designing but also the Bond villains and Bond girls as well.
LH: The great fun in Bond is to do the villainous ladies, obviously, and the villainous men. But especially the ladies, because usually these days they?ve written in the script a lovely character development so that you don?t know who they are at the beginning and they become bad or vice versa. So making them a wardrobe of clothes and designing them with the actor and the director is one of the joys of doing Bond.
BC: The Dr. No jacket ? we recreated that jacket [for the exhibit] because, actually, it is like the Anthony Sinclair suit ? that jacket has served as a reference point for all the Bond villains. Bond villains are never wearing a suit and tie ? There?s always this reference point, but then it continues on and is tweaked to be contemporary.
MC: And the fashions don?t just look good ? they?re functional.
BC: The thing is [the films] are action adventures so the clothes had to be clothes that could move. Feminists have always lamented that women in Bond films, their skirts are slit to the thigh. Well, that?s so they could run faster at a moment?s notice. Or the wonderful dress we have ? the Carey Lowell rip-away hem dress ? which is in the casino from License to Kill. She whipped off the bottom of her skirt because she was concealing a gun underneath it. And it became like a knee-length dress, and she could run. So yeah, definitely they?re functional
MC: As a curator, what do you hope people discover about Bond or what it takes to design and style Bond from this exhibit?
LH: My passion is for people to understand a little bit more about the design in movies. And by using the vehicle of the Bond films, because we have the archive, I want people to look at the design of props, the design of sets, the design of the gadgets, at the design of an umbrella that turns into something else, all these things. And, of course, costumes. But the product design nature of what goes on and the set design or architecture nature of what has gone on in these films is phenomenal, and I hope people come and are able to get into a bit of that.
BC: We were tasked with creating a retrospective, but we didn?t want it to be nostalgic. We wanted it to be modern ? These pieces are displayed as artifacts, which is rare because production design drawings aren?t necessarily that. But then when you look at the talent behind these films, they really did attain a cultural relevance ? The great thing for film buffs is the storyboards?It really will convey how a film is made. Hopefully, the cumulative experience is that people will walk away understanding the complexity of production design.

Filmmakers Document the Creation of National Parks in Marin and ...
?
A lot has changed since people came together in the 1950?s and 1980?s to create the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, but the general attitude remains the same when it comes to protecting open space.
?You have to work for free, and you have to be crazy,? Filmmaker Kenji Yamamoto joked Monday night after the screening of his and Nancy Kelly?s documentary, Rebels With a Cause, at the Patch office in Palo Alto as part of the UNAFF 2012 International Documentary Film Festival.
The film, eight years in the making, was co-presented by the Mill Valley Film Festival where it was also shown. It highlights the lengths volunteers went to to preserve the miles of natural land that stretch along the California coast in Marin and San Francisco. Facing the federal government, private developers, corporations and county supervisors, it takes us from Congressman Clem Miller?s Point Reyes Bill in 1962, rising land prices through the Kennedy and Nixon years, and a national campaign to save not only Point Reyes, but 13 other parks across the country.
?There were a tremendous amount of people involved,? Yamamoto said after the screening. ?Ordinary people who really treasured what was around them, and we are so damn lucky they fought so hard.?
The film commemorates Point Reyes? 50th anniversary, but during a panel discussion local environmentalists brought us back to the present by reminding voters they will have a chance to help support the preservation of those same lands in the upcoming election.
Measure A would incease sales tax by a quarter-cent, and raise $10 million for the protection of parks and natural resources. The measure was placed on the ballot by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in August and requires two-thirds approval to pass on Nov. 6.
In addition to Yamamoto and Kelly, the panel included Lennie Roberts a legislative advocate for the Committee for Green Foothills; Audrey Rust, retired president, C.E.O. and executive director of the Peninsula Open Space Trust; and filmmaker Gwenaelle Gobe, whose documentary This Space Available, an examination of billboards and other commercial images prevalent in our outdoor spaces, was shown later that evening.
The panelists talked about preservation efforts today, and Kelly said she believes our relationship with the natural environment has changed over the years ? from her own camping trip with successful executives who were afraid to sleep overnight in a tent, to children in East San Jose who have never seen the ocean.
?Just as our income levels are separating more and more, I think our experience with nature is separating more and more,? she said.
Eventually, Kelley and Yamamoto hope to produce a DVD of the documentary that will be shown in California public schools.
?To get young people,? Yamamoto said, ?excited about the outdoors.?

Senate intelligence panel to hold Libya attack hearings
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate intelligence committee on Thursday said it will hold hearings in November on security and intelligence issues raised by the September 11 attacks on American facilities in Libya.
In a statement, the committee said it first will hold a closed oversight hearing on November 15 on the Benghazi attacks, when lawmakers return after the November 6 presidential and congressional elections. The Democratic-controlled panel said additional hearings would follow.
Some Senate Republicans have said the committee should hold public hearings on the response to the attacks, in which U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other American officials were killed.
The committee, chaired by Senator Dianne Feinstein, said it had received briefings and documents related to the attacks
It said aspects under investigation include how U.S. intelligence and threat information relating to Libya and other Middle East countries was handled before September 11, when and how such information was disseminated, and how government agencies responded to the information.
The committee will also examine what the U.S. government knows about what occurred during the attacks, who is believed to have been responsible for them, and what the United States is doing to track down and hold the perpetrators responsible.
The committee said it will also examine security at the State Department and U.S. facilities in the Middle East and North Africa to determine whether existing measures are sufficient.
The committee will also examine whether U.S. intelligence agencies are well-enough funded and staffed with people with appropriate skills to properly operate in the Middle East and North Africa.
The response to the September 11 attacks in Libya has become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.
President Barack Obama's Republican critics have suggested that the administration's handling of the incident raises questions about its truthfulness and competence, even as Obama and his Democratic supporters are touting his success in cracking down on Islamic militants, including the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Republicans question why administration officials publicly played up intelligence suggesting that the Benghazi attacks grew from spontaneous demonstrations launched by militants against a short film lampooning the Prophet Mohammed.
Republicans also want to hear why the administration mentioned, but played down, intelligence suggesting the involvement of militants with suspected connections to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.
A State Department email made public earlier this week showed that two hours after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission compound in Benghazi, the Department's Operations Center advised officials at various U.S. agencies that a militant group called Ansar al Sharia had claimed credit on Twitter and Facebook for the attacks.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on Wednesday said that such internet postings did not constitute hard evidence of who was responsible for the attacks.
The State Department has set up an independent review board to investigate the background and response to the Benghazi attacks.

SBA's Venture Capital Program Has Record Year - OPEN Forum
Conventional venture capitalists are writing smaller checks and funding fewer deals these days, but the U.S. Small Business Administration?s venture capital program is growing.?
The program?officially called the Small Business Investment Company debenture program?forked over a record $2.95 billion to 1,094 small businesses in fiscal year 2012, which ended Sept. 30. That?s a 14 percent increase over last year?s $2.59 billion, and an 85 percent increase from 2010, which was also a record year for the program.
The program began in 1958, with the aim of helping businesses in industries and geographic areas not typically served by conventional VC firms. Since its inception, it?s invested approximately $63 billion in some 110,000 small business in the U.S., according to SBA figures. Some notable successes that received SBIC funding in their early days: Apple Computer, Costco, Gymboree, Federal Express, Outback Steakhouse, and Restoration Hardware. (For some other SBIC successes, click here.) The program also suffered some serious losses, hence the decline in financings from 2005 until 2010.?
In fiscal year 2012, the SBA also provided $1.92 billion in loan guarantees to 301 SBICs in 2012. These firms raised $1 billion in private capital, which is then used to invest in small businesses.
The SBA issued 30 new SBIC licenses in 2012, up from 22 the previous year.
?Over the past two years, we?ve made SBIC work better than ever before,? said SBA Administrator Karen Mills in a statement. ?We cut licensing time in half, which has strengthened efficiency and made it possible to get capital into the hands of small businesses more quickly. When an SBIC invests in a company, it can scale up and create jobs.?
This is all good for entrepreneurs, because traditional venture capital firms are not as forthcoming with funding. During the third quarter of 2012, venture capitalists invested $6.5 billion in 890 deals. The total dollar figure is down 11 percent from the previous quarter, according to PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association?and the year?s figures as a whole are expected to be less than those in 2011.

Conservative talker Mark Levin's legal arm sues EPA | The Daily Caller
Conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin?s legal group is suing the Environmental Protection Agency to obtain documents pertaining to the regulations the agency plans to implement after the election.
Levin?s law firm, the Landmark Legal Foundation, filed the?lawsuit in federal court this week, seeking a court order directing the EPA to preserve and produce all records related to the agency?s regulatory plans after the presidential election.
The suit argues that news stories and political observers have indicated the EPA is ?intentionally delaying the issuance of controversial new regulations until after the November election? with the possibility that ?a) the Obama Administration is improperly politicizing EPA activities; b) EPA officials are attempting to shield their true policy goals from the public; and/or c) EPA officials themselves are putting partisan interests above the public welfare.?
In August, Landmark, via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, sought all the records dealing with rules and regulations from Jan. 1 to Aug. 17, 2012 that have not been finalized. The EPA acknowledged receipt of the request in August, but denied the group?s request to expedite the process.
Landmark appealed the denial, the EPA again refused to expedite the process this week.
?So today the EPA turned it down, we had a lawsuit ready to go because we knew they would turn it down, and we sued them,? Levin said Monday on his radio show.
Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, released a report last week on the regulations he expects the EPA will implement after the election. The senator told The Daily Caller that he appreciated the challenge to the agency.
?I welcome Mark [Levin]?s ongoing work to expose the Obama-EPA regulatory agenda currently hidden until after Election Day. Last week I released a report exposing the regulatory onslaught that the Obama-EPA has punted on until after the election,? Inhofe said. ?These job-crushing regulations that will soon be unleashed will cripple our economy and put millions more out of work. No wonder the Obama-EPA has ?earned a reputation for abuse,? as the Washington Post editorial recently put it.?
The EPA did not respond to TheDC?s request for comment by deadline.

India has joined the conglomerate of?nations directly opposed to the agricultural corruption brought upon by bloated biotechnology giant Monsanto, declaring legal action against the corporation for a crime dubbed ?biopiracy?. The charges were brought against Monsanto for utilizing a local eggplant variety to develop their own genetically modified version including the notorious biopesticide Bt. India?s National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is alleging that the developers of India?s first GM food crop?Jalna-based Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco) partnered with St. Louis?based seed giant Monsanto and several local universities?used local varieties to develop the transgenic crop, but failed to gain the appropriate licenses for field trials.
Will India be targeted by the United States and others for opposing GMO crops? Leaked documents have revealed that the United States may ?penalize? nations against Monsanto?s genetically modified creations with military-style trade wars and more. In fact, it was?that in late 2007, the United States ambassador to France and business partner to George W. Bush,?Craig Stapleton, requested that the European Union along with particular nations that did not support?GMO?crops face repercussions.
The ambassador plainly calls for ?target retaliation? against nations who are against using Monsanto?s genetically modified corn, despite research linking it to severe damage to your body. Therefore, the question must be asked as to whether or not the United States will attempt to ?penalize? India for taking such an unprecedented move against Monsanto. While that remains to be seen, it is clear that Monsanto is increasingly being resisted across the globe by nations and individuals alike.

German gaming giant Bigpoint lets go 120 employees
German online gaming giant Bigpoint is letting go about 120 employees, with founder and CEO Heiko Hubertz also set to stand down from the top role.
The 120 job cuts, as reported late last night by Games Industry International, Financial Times Deutschland and others, are apparently due to worse than expected performance for the company.
Bigpoint will no longer be carrying out games development in the US:??The games that we have developed in the last two years haven?t been that successful, and the San Francisco area and Bay Area is quite a competitive market,? Hubertz (pictured above) told Games Industry International. ?San Francisco is, after New York, one of the most expensive cities you can live in in the US, so the people are quite expensive.?
?We haven?t had the strong growth we hoped?
About 40 employees in San Francisco will be let go as well as about 80 administrative staff in Hamburg, in a bid to reduce costs ? ?about 15 per cent of the company?s workforce, according to Financial Times Deutschland.
?We need space for other investments in other areas,? Hubertz said. ?We?ve doubled our revenues almost every year, and we had a budget for this year of what we wanted in terms of revenue. Unfortunately we haven?t had the strong growth we hoped, but we had hired for this growth.?
Also just announced, Hubertz will be stepping down as CEO to take up a position at the head of the company?s supervisory board. He told media this is a move that?s been planned for a while, and that there is no direct connection to this week?s job cuts.
What?s next in free-to-play gaming land?
Bigpoint, which made its name with?free-to-play browser games that entice users to spend on virtual goods and in-game bonuses, and counts titles such as Battlestar Galactica Online among its portfolio,?started 2012 with strong growth plans.?In January, the company celebrated 250 million registered players and operations in?Hamburg, Malta, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, London, France, and Spain, with more scheduled to open this year.
The company went through a refocus in July with media reports of 29 job losses, the scrapping of mobile projects and a shake-up at exec level.
Last night?s news, hot on the heels of?social?gaming king Zynga?s job cuts, game scrapping and office closures, might be a sign of trouble emerging in the free-to-play ?gaming as a service? industry.
Yet, Belarus-based Wargaming, the maker of World of Tanks, is a weight on the other side. Accel Partners? Max Niederhofer name-checked the company at the recent IdeaLab! conference as a player with earnings akin to ?printing money? and now too big to be acquired.
