Mitt Romney's Flight Across Florida: Cake On A Plane

Andrew Jenks eats birthday cake with the Republican presidential nominee on the eve of the primary election.

TAMPA, Florida — I got the chance to ride the Mitt Romney plane today as he travels across Florida to give his closing arguments for why he should be the Republican presidential nominee.

If the former Massachusetts governor pulls off a decisive victory in Florida, it could provide the sense of momentum that he has been lacking so far. After (sort of) winning Iowa and decisively taking New Hampshire, a solid win here might signal that the GOP's traditional base is coalescing around Romney. However, if former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich can pull off a win, the race could turn into a two-man duel that lasts well past the next Tuesday's contest.

Despite all that pressure, on the day before the huge swing-state election, he seemed relaxed. Very relaxed.

In fact, he even decided to celebrate a reporter's birthday before we took off. Romney himself brought back cake while singing "Happy Birthday" and threw bags of chips around to all of us. (I missed my shot.)

What's interesting is the way in which Romney interacts with the press — the group of 25 or so reporters and photographers who follow him everywhere he goes. And it's essential for the governor and his staffers to stay on their good side. On this quick jet across the state, I was offered chocolate chip cookies, cherries, cheeses and roast beef sandwiches.

It was a tasty slice of life in the world of how politicians interact with campaign reporters.

MTV is on the scene in Florida! Check back for up-to-the-minute coverage of the primaries and stick with PowerOf12.org throughout the 2012 presidential election season.

Santorum's Hypocrisy Highlighted by Daughter's Illness (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum suspended his bid for the GOP nod to run against Barack Obama when his daughter, Bella Santorum, was hospitalized, according to the Associated Press. Bella suffers from Trisomy 18, a rare genetic disorder in which a baby has some or all of an extra chromosome. While it is always tragic for a parent to face losing a child, the situation highlights a political issue: Santorum's hypocrisy on health care, abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

Santorum's campaign website discusses his views on these matters. He is emphatically against a woman's right to control her own body in reproductive matters and is adamantly opposed to embryonic stem cell research. He is against a single-payer national health care system provided to all citizens. He opposes the first two on religious grounds on the third for reasons of political dogma.

As to abortion, Santorum flip-flops on his opposition, according to a Care2.com report. It's easy for him to rail against abortion when such ranting might win him votes.

It's also easier for him to oppose it because he has the best health care in America available to him and his family -- provided at taxpayer expense, no less. He never had to consider whether care for a terminally ill child would destroy his family financially.

Unless the U.S. enacts a national health care plan most families will never be able to afford the care needed for a child with Trisomy 18. Santorum's family will never lack for health care or face crippling medical debt -- but as far as he's concerned it's fine for your family to have those problems.

Santorum's opposition to embryonic stem cell research is ludicrous for two reasons. First, such research involves the collection of cells from a blastocyst, a blob of about 150 cells so small the human eye cannot detect it, according to the National Institute for Health. Second, such research could save the lives of his daughter and countless others suffering from her condition. It's despicable for him to fight against the best possible hope for a cure to the very condition killing his child.

It makes me wonder how Santorum's opinion might change if he was an average American with a household income of less than $50,000 per year and no health insurance. I bet he'd sing a different tune.

Ahead in Florida, Romney turns focus back to Obama (AP)

MIAMI ? Mitt Romney strode into the final 48 hours of the pivotal Florida Republican primary campaign with the confidence of a resurgent front-runner, predicting he'll win in Tuesday's voting while looking ahead to future contests.

His main rival Newt Gingrich hustled around the state, trying to rekindle the energy that lifted him to victory in the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21. He acknowledged the possibility he could lose here but vowed to fight Romney to the party's national convention this summer.

Outspent 3-1 on television advertising in Florida during the campaign's closing week, Gingrich was working the free media by chatting up reporters on Saturday and scheduling appearances on two nationally televised Sunday talk shows.

Gingrich has been under heavy attack from Romney and allies of the former Massachusetts governor. Romney had spent the past several days, including during two Florida debates, sharply criticizing Gingrich's discipline, temperament and ethics during and after his time as the House speaker in the 1990s.

Romney changed his line of attack on Saturday to refocus his criticism on President Barack Obama.

"He's detached from reality," Romney said. He criticized Obama's plan to cut the size of the military and what he described as the administration's weak foreign policy.

Gingrich's South Carolina momentum has largely evaporated amid the pounding he has sustained from Romney's campaign and the pro-Romney group called Restore Our Future. They have spent some $6.8 million in ads criticizing Gingrich in the Florida campaign's final week. Polls show Romney solidly ahead.

Gingrich planned to campaign Sunday in central Florida.

Romney had a series of rallies planned for south Florida. He was also looking ahead to the next-up Nevada caucuses and was airing ads in that state ahead of the Feb. 4 contest.

Gingrich sought to regain momentum with the endorsement of Herman Cain, a tea party favorite and former presidential hopeful whose White House effort foundered amid sexual harassment allegations.

Gingrich has been put on the defensive under Romney's withering attack. Gingrich responded by describing the former Massachusetts governor as "dishonest" and questioning his GOP bona fides.

His pledge to stay in the race suggests Republicans could be in for a long winter and spring if money continues to flow into Gingrich's campaign.

A third GOP contestant, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, has made an effort to campaign in the Sunshine State but trails Romney and Gingrich by a wide margin. He cancelled his Sunday events after his 3-year-old daughter Bella was hospitalized. She suffers from a serious genetic condition.

Texas congressman Ron Paul has invested little in the Florida race and is looking ahead to Nevada.

Browns hire Brad Childress as OC

By TOM WITHERS

updated 12:35 a.m. ET Jan. 28, 2012

CLEVELAND - Pat Shurmur brought in a close friend to help him fix Cleveland's broken offense.

Shurmur hired former Minnesota coach Brad Childress as his first offensive coordinator on Friday, reuniting two coaches who spent seven seasons together on Andy Reid's staff with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Browns confirmed Childress' hiring with a release that did not include any quotes.

Childress, who spent nearly five seasons with the Vikings before he was fired in 2010, will try to improve the Browns' dismal offense, which scored just 218 points last season, finished 29th in total yardage, 28th in rushing and 24th in passing. He'll also have input in the team's vital decision at starting quarterback. ? a choice that could impact the club for years.

The 55-year-old Childress was a logical choice to join the Browns, who went 4-12 in their first season under Shurmur. In addition to being tight with Shurmur, Childress is familiar with the West Coast offense the Browns installed last year and he's represented by agent Bob Lamonte, who also has Shurmur and Browns president Mike Holmgren as clients.

Shurmur juggled both head coach and coordinator duties during a troublesome first season in Cleveland. It's believed Shurmur will initially call Cleveland's plays next season but he intends to turn things over to Childress, who recently interviewed for Tampa Bay's head coaching job. Childress has only one season (2006) of experience calling plays.

Childress is the third former NFL head coach on Shurmur's staff, joining defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes.

Childress was Philadelphia's offensive coordinator from 2003-05 when Shurmur coached the Eagles quarterbacks. While he was with the Eagles, Childress went to three straight NFC title games and the Super Bowl in 2004.

Shurmur was asked about Childress during his season-ending news conference on Jan. 3.

"I know Brad very well," Shurmur said. "He and I worked together for a long time. He's a terrific coach."

Childress went 39-35 in four-plus seasons with the Vikings, twice leading them to the playoffs and going 1-2. Minnesota won division titles in 2008 and 2009, when the Vikings made it to the NFC title game with quarterback Brett Favre, whom Childress had famously picked up at the airport. But after a 3-7 start in 2010, Childress was fired by owner Zygi Wilf one day after the Vikings were blown out at home by rival Green Bay.

The Browns considered hiring an offensive coordinator before last season but didn't find a suitable candidate. Holmgren suggested Shurmur maintain play-calling duties to control the offense and build a stronger bond with second-year quarterback Colt McCoy. Shurmur, though, seemed overwhelmed at times as the Browns had some communication breakdowns and time-management issues.

The addition of Childress should free up Shurmur during the week as he prepares for games.

"I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down on some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more," Shurmur said after the season. "That's a key piece."

Numbers game at the Pro Bowl

By JAYMES SONG

updated 8:38 p.m. ET Jan. 27, 2012

KAPOLEI, Hawaii - The Pro Bowl has turned into a numbers game.

The AFC features five players who wear No. 24, including three corners, which has caused some confusion with autograph seekers and photographers leading up to Sunday's all-star game.

The quintet of 24s include New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, Houston Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews and Jacksonville Jaguars special teamer Montell Owens.

They all posed for photos together after Friday's practice.

So will real No. 24 please stand up?

"They're all the real No. 24s on their own team," Mathews said. "On the Chargers, I'm the real No. 24."

Mathews wore No. 21 at Fresno State, but changed to 24 when he arrived at San Diego.

"(LaDainian Tomlinson) was No. 21, so I had to change my number," he said. "I'm sure he wouldn't have minded if I wore it, though. But that's L.T.'s number. I wanted to make my own brand."

Numbers often become a part of a player's brand or identity, especially for superstars in their respective sports. Michael Jordan is 23, even though he also wore 45. Jerry Rice's No. 80 San Francisco 49ers jersey is a classic.

Besides serving as a player's brand, numbers often carry a story behind it and can represent something they've carried since childhood, the number of a player they admired or simply a special number. Or it could mean nothing at all.

"It's my first year wearing 24 and I made it to the Pro Bowl," said Joseph, who switched from 22 when he left the Cincinnati Bengals after five seasons and joined the Texans.

"I wouldn't say it's my lucky number, but it's working for me."

Bailey, on the other hand, is making his 11th Pro Bowl and has worn 24 since joining the NFL 13 years ago. He wore No. 4 at Georgia. Bailey acknowledges having so many 24s may create some confusion with fans, but not with the coaches or players.

"We all know each other and we're all going to represent the number real well," he said.

At Friday's practice on the grounds of the players' hotel at the Ko Olina Resort, Revis played the left side while Bailey was on the right.

Revis said there are some similarities between the 24s.

"All of us are great at we do and that's play great football," he said.

While some are selective about their numbers, Owens was willing to take whatever he could get after playing his collegiate ball as No. 33 at Maine.

"I noticed all the 24s out here, but for me, it wasn't even the number I selected at Jacksonville. It was given to me," he said. "I was a guy who came out undrafted and so when you come out undrafted, you better take any number they give you."

For the NFC, there's only a pair of 24s ? Arizona Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson and Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. But there are four 21s.

Cardinals rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson wore No. 7 at LSU, changed to the standard double-digit NFL number after being selected fifth overall in the 2011 draft.

"It (21) is definitely the hottest number out there and a lot of guys are representing it well," Peterson said. "I obviously wanted to follow that trend as well."

But it came at a cost, which Peterson wouldn't disclose. He purchased the number because another Cardinal already had it.

Safety Hamza Abdullah wore No. 21 before Peterson. Abdullah is now 23, but apparently still has his old number in his heart. He still tweets from (at)HamzaAbdullah21.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson is among the four 21s for the NFC.

"But there's an elder statesman 21 and that would be me," he said.

Woodson wanted to be 21 back when he first joined the Raiders, but that number was taken by Eric Allen. So he picked 24, which became one of the more popular Raiders jerseys. But he nabbed No. 21 when he joined the Packers.

"I was leaving Oakland behind and moving on to another chapter of my life so I wanted to change it and 21 was there, so I took it," he said. "(In the end), it's all about the names on the jersey. That's what counts."

NASA satellite sees birth of Tropical Storm Ethel, now threatening Rodrigues

NASA satellite sees birth of Tropical Storm Ethel, now threatening Rodrigues [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 19-Jan-2012

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Storm Ethel on January 19, 2012 after she was born in the Southern Indian Ocean. The island of Rodrigues is now under Tropical Cyclone Warnings as Ethel approaches and strengthens.

When Aqua passed over newborn Ethel at 09:30 UTC (4:30 a.m. EST) on Jan. 19, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard Aqua captured a visible image of the storm, and showed that it had good circulation. The strongest storms appear to be around the center and northwest of center. Bands of thunderstorms from the east-southeast appear to spiral into Ethel's center on the MODIS satellite imagery.

At 0300 UTC on January 19 (10 p.m. EST, Jan. 18) Tropical Storm Ethel had maximum sustained winds near 35 knots (40 mph/65 kmh). Ethel was 810 miles east-northeast of La Reunion Island, centered near 14.2 South longitude and 67.7 East latitude. Ethel was moving to the west-southwest at 11 knots (~13 mph/20 kmh).

Currently, Ethel threatens the island of Rodrigues. Rodrigues is the smallest of the Mascarene Islands and was home to 40,000 people in 2006. It is a dependency of Mauritius. According to Wikipedia, it is located 348 miles (560 km) east of Mauritius island. It is surrounded by a coral reef and about 43 square miles (109 km).

The Mauritus Meteorological Service (MMS) has posted a tropical cyclone class two warning for Rodrigues. A class two warning means that within 12 hours, the warning area will likely experience hurricane-force wind gusts of 75 mph (120 kilometers) per hour. The MMS calls for downpours and gusty winds today, with rain becoming heavier and more frequent on January 20. Sustained winds are expected to be near 25 mph (40 kmh) with gusts as high as 56 mph (90 kmh) during the evening hours on Jan. 19, 2012. Seas are expected to be rough. For updates in French and Creole, visit: http://metservice.intnet.mu/?page_id=625.

Because Ethel is in an area with warm sea surface temperatures (warmer than the 80F/26.6C threshold needed to maintain a tropical cyclone) and low wind shear, she is expected to strengthen quickly into hurricane (cyclone) strength. Afterward, Ethel is expected to encounter increased wind shear conditions which will again weaken the storm.

The cyclone is forecast to intensify rapidly to hurricane strength before adverse atmospheric conditions prompt a weakening trend.

Countdown to crash of Russia's failed Mars probe (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia's failed Mars probe Phobos-Grunt was expected to plummet back to Earth Sunday, sending space officials scrambling to predict where it would hit in the countdown to re-entry.

Space agency Roskosmos said debris from its doomed 14-ton spacecraft, which includes 11 tons of toxic rocket fuel, would likely fall to Earth between 1750 GMT and 1834 GMT, possibly in the Atlantic Ocean about midway between Brazil and West Africa.

Due to constant changes in the upper atmosphere, which is strongly influenced by solar activity, the exact time and place of the satellite's return is unknown.

Earler, Roscosmos said the site could be anywhere along an elliptical orbit over a broad swathe of the globe, from roughly as far north as London to the same latitude as the heel of Argentina.

Igor Marinin, editor of a space journal published by Roskosmos, earlier said he expected it to fall in the Atlantic Ocean some 1,200 km (750 miles) from Buenos Aires.

"In my view, it is most likely to fall in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, but the picture is constantly changing because the atmosphere is shifting and shaking so it is very difficult to predict an uncontrolled descent," he told Reuters.

Russia's Interfax news agency cited a Russian space industry source as saying it could fall on land, about 120 km (75 miles) west of the northern Argentinian city of Rosario.

Experts say the falling space junk poses little risk. The probe's aluminium fuel tank is expected to burn up high in the atmosphere.

"If anyone gets to see it, it will be a fabulous show. I don't think there has been an explosion of such a large volume of fuel in space history," Marinin, editor of the journal Novosti Kosmonavtiki, told Reuters.

The $165-million spacecraft, designed to retrieve soil samples from the Martian moon Phobos, was meant to be Russia's first successful interplanetary mission in over two decades.

But it became stuck in orbit after a botched launch on November 8, and has since been slowly losing altitude due to gravity's pull.

Some 20 to 30 small pieces of debris with a total weight of 200 kg (440 lbs) could hit Earth, Roskosmos said, adding that a tiny radioactive cargo of Cobalt-57 was too small to cause harm.

One component likely to survive re-entry is a small return capsule specifically designed to crash-land back on Earth in 2014, mission scientist Alexander Zakharov said.

"This is the capsule that was meant to bring back samples from Phobos, it's disappointing," Zakharov said. "We're hoping Roskosmos will approve a new craft to accomplish this mission."

Phobos-Grunt was one of five botched launches last year that marred celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering first human space flight and hurt Moscow's pride.

In an apparent attempt to deflect blame, Russia's space agency chief hinted last week that foreign sabotage might be the reason.

"I don't want to blame anyone, but there are very powerful means to interfere with spacecraft today whose use cannot be ruled out," Vladimir Popovkin told the daily Izvestia.

Stargazers worldwide are watching for reentry, including the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordinating Committee, an offshoot of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Under a U.N. space convention, Russia could be liable to pay compensation for any harm caused by bits of falling spacecraft.

In 1981, the Soviet Union paid Canada $3 million for the cost of cleaning up radioactive debris scattered in the crash of a Soviet nuclear-powered reconnaissance satellite, Kosmos 954.

With most of the planet's surface covered by water, Russia's errant space probe is likely to splash into the ocean.

When NASA's defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell out of orbit in September, it showered debris into the Pacific Ocean. Germany's Rosat X-ray telescope re-entered a month later over the Bay of Bengal.

North Dakota Ad Might Be Racy, but it is Also a Success (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Associated Press is reporting an advertisement promoting tourism in North Dakota has come under fire for being too racy. As the article notes, the ad features two guys and three girls flirting through a window through a hotel bar. The Valley View News is even reporting the tagline -- "Drinks, Dinner, Decisions. Arrive a guest. Leave a legend." -- attracted a lot of negative attention on social media site Facebook. Of course, in a twist the ad actually worked.

Even though WDAY News is reporting the ad could be sending the wrong message, the point is that a message is being sent. When it comes to promotion, generally the more outlandish the better. Would Lady Gaga be as popular without the clothes and the attitude? A little controversy goes a long way, and can really stretch advertising dollars.

According the AP report the ad has been removed from the website, but there can be little doubt folks around the U.S. are talking about tourism in North Dakota. Sure, the tagline is a little suggestive, but it is not like this was the first time sex was used to sell something. The advertising agency that created it should be commended, because the message was delivered. Really, the ad could not have performed any better if it was scripted.

The bottom line is that successful advertising gets people talking. Once that talking turns into clicking and researching, the effectiveness of any particular campaign is increased dramatically. All the uproar means is that folks actually took the time to find the ad, which means the ad worked. In this particular case, the flirty photo with a suggestive tagline gets people thinking and maybe even dreaming, about what is up to the individual person. If nothing else, North Dakota looks a lot more fun than it did last week.

On ACA, the election has last word (Politico)

Think the Supreme Court is where the future of President Barack Obama?s health care law will be settled? Think again.

The real verdict on the future of Obama?s signature achievement will come in November ? and the law?s supporters say a Republican sweep could pose a bigger threat to the law than the nine justices ever could.

The court is expected to hand down its decision at the end of its term in June. But most legal observers doubt that it will strike down the?whole of the?Affordable Care Act, even if it finds the mandate unconstitutional.

In contrast, the Republican candidates are all on record as promising to scrap the whole thing.

While a Republican president wouldn?t be able to hand out waivers for states to get out of all of the health law?s requirements, as some of the presidential contenders suggest, he?d be able to direct the new?Health and Human Services secretary to slow-walk pivotal programs, dramatically relax the regulations and possibly defund the law.

Front-runner Mitt Romney has pledged to repeal the law, and his policy aides are figuring out just how much dismantling could be done through the White House and HHS, without congressional action.

?I do think the law itself is in jeopardy? if a Republican wins the White House, said Neera Tanden, who served as a senior adviser for health reform at HHS during the legislative debate and is now president of the Center for American Progress.

A new president and HHS secretary would have a lot of power during their first year in office. That?s when HHS will have to finalize all the regulatory details for the state or federal health insurance exchanges where many consumers will buy coverage after 2014.

The concern of the law?s backers is based in part on the unknown: It?s unclear exactly how far a Republican administration would go to slow down the law, especially if there is backlash over getting rid of its popular pieces.

And it?s unknown whether the Senate or House will be controlled by Democrats, who could stop legislative efforts to repeal or defund the law. Even if they lose control of the Senate, Democrats may still have enough votes to be able to slow down or block efforts to repeal the law signed by Obama nearly two years ago.

Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA and a strong supporter of the law, said the election is the ?most important development for the future of health care that could take place this year.?

Pollack said he?d be even more concerned about a Republican winning the White House if the Senate and House are controlled by Republicans, too, allowing them to run the table on repealing the health law.

Joseph Antos, a health policy expert at the American Enterprise Institute who opposes the law, agreed that the election matters more than the Supreme Court ? but he also said Republicans may have to compromise on repealing the whole law if they get public backlash over repealing its most popular provisions.

?I can?t see a Republican getting rid of guaranteed issue,? Antos said, referring to the provision that requires insurance companies to accept all applicants regardless of their medical history. ?Certainly no Republican is going to change the provision that says children under 26 can sign on to their parents? plans.?

John McDonough, who helped draft the health law as a senior adviser in the Senate and is now a professor at the Harvard University School of Public Health, sees the most extreme outcomes of Election Day like this: Republicans take the White House, and both chambers of Congress, allowing them to repeal significant pieces of the law through reconciliation. (That?s assuming there is little chance Republicans get a filibuster-proof majority ? though if they did, they could repeal the law immediately.)

Business Experience, Arnold Kling | EconLog | Library of Economics ...

Will Wilkinson summarizes some discussion of the relevance of business experience to being President. One of the tropes that he mentions (without endorsing it) is that "business people don't realize that when you come to Washington you just can't boss people around. It's not as easy as it is when you're CEO."

Actually, that is completely wrong. In business it is actually really hard to get people to do what you want. In fact, understanding that fact is exactly what sets CEOs apart from policy wonks. Policy wonks think that you write a law and that solves a problem. They think that you promulgate regulations and people do not figure out how to game those regulations.

Someone with business experience would never announce a mortgage loan modification program and expect it to be implemented in a matter of weeks (remember, a mortgage is a legal document that is somewhat antiquated with procedures that differ by state and local jurisdiction; remember that, prior to 2008, mortgage servicers had very few staff with any experience at all in loan modification; remember that when you introduce entirely new parameters into a highly computerized business process, somebody has to determine which systems are impacted, gather requirements, redesign databases, develop logic to protect against data input errors, develop a test plan,...). Someone with business experience would not enact a program that fines companies for failing to use a fuel that does not yet exist. Someone with business experience, I dare say, would understand that chaotic organization has consequences.

I am not saying that business experience is the be-all and end-all. I am not saying that it should be required of a Presidential candidate. But when Congress and the Administration are permeated with people who lack business experience, this has consequences, and the consequences are not good.

Steve Colbert talks about presidential ambitions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Comedian Stephen Colbert says that just because his name won't appear on Saturday's ballot in South Carolina's Republican primary doesn't mean he couldn't become president, or even pope, someday.

In an oftentimes awkward, meandering interview on Sunday, Colbert told ABC's "This Week" that he established a presidential exploratory committee last week that consists of "someone who is good with explosives," a mountain climber and a brain in a jar. He likened himself to a "one-man Louis and Clark" expedition looking for his Sacagawea.

Colbert said if his quest for presidency doesn't work out, he would be willing to throw his weight behind one of the other candidates. He said: "All they have to do is come kiss my ring like they did Donald Trump's."

Colbert grew up in South Carolina.
