Sony Is Also Working On A Secret Plan To Blow ... - Business Insider

Sony boss Kazuo Hirai

Is anyone in the technology industry not working on a plan to disrupt the traditional cable model?

The latest entrant is Sony, which is apparently trying to figure out how to build a virtual cable network that is distributed through the Internet.

Andrew Wallenstein at Variety says Sony has been quietly working to reach deals with content companies. It sounds like it's not working out very well so far.

Sony would need to pay a lot of money for the content, and a lot of money for the infrastructure to deliver the content.

Sony is not a company like Apple, Microsoft, or even Intel. It has failed to deliver hit products for a while now and it's in serious trouble. Taking on a high-risk project like disrupting the cable industry doesn't make a lot of sense. Then again, we're not sure what Sony's good at anymore, so maybe it needs to throw a hail-mary and hope for the best.

Unlike Intel, which was exploring offering users channels on per-channel basis, Sony is only interested in delivering packages of content, much like how we already get cable. It's hard to see how Sony would be able to lower the price of cable for consumers, and thus hard to see how this thing wouldn't wind up dead on arrival.?

And, while we're on the topic, as a consumer, you may have your fingers crossed that Sony or Intel or anyone is going to do something to blow up the traditional cable business. Here's why even if it happens, you'll be screwed.

The cable companies control the pipes. They deliver your TV and they deliver your Internet. If you stop paying for TV, they will just jack up your Internet bill. And so, any savings you might get from Sony would ultimately be wiped out.

If you really want to pray for the death of cable, then you need to pray for something like Google Fiber, which is a nicer version of the cable companies.

Spinal ultrasounds seeking why astronauts grow taller in space

Jan. 3, 2013 ? Did you ever wish you could be just a teensy bit taller? Well, if you spend a few months in space, you could get your wish -- temporarily. It is a commonly known fact that astronauts living aboard the International Space Station grow up to 3 percent taller while living in microgravity. They return to their normal height when back on Earth. Studying the impact of this change on the spine and advancing medical imaging technologies are the goals of the Spinal Ultrasound investigation.

"This is the very first time that spinal ultrasound will be used to evaluate the changes in the spine," said Scott A. Dulchavsky, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator for the station study. "Spinal ultrasound is more challenging to perform than many of the previous ultrasound examinations done in space."

Part of the difficulty with imaging the spine is quite simply human anatomy. Using Ultrasound 2, the machine aboard station as a facility for human health studies, astronauts have an advanced tool to view the inner workings of their bodies.

"Today there is a new ultrasound device on the station that allows more precise musculoskeletal imaging required for assessment of the complex anatomy and the spine," Dulchavsky said. "The crew will be able to perform these complex evaluations in the next year due to a newly developed Just-In-Time training guide for spinal ultrasound, combined with refinements in crew training and remote guidance procedures."

The research could help with developing exercises for better crew health and guiding improved rehabilitation techniques when astronauts return to Earth. Understanding how changes to the spine occur in real-time response to life in space also will help crews prepare for future long-duration missions.

Another benefit of this research is that spinal ultrasound could gain clinical acceptance on the ground for medical testing. Dulchavsky points out that this shift could reduce costs and provide a safer imaging option for patients.

"Ultrasound also allows us to evaluate physiology in motion, such as the movement of muscles, blood in vessels, and function in other systems in the body," said Dulchavsky. "Physiologic parameters derived from ultrasound and Doppler give instantaneous observations about the body non-invasively without radiation."

Six crew members will serve as test subjects for these spinal ultrasound scans. The data sessions are scheduled to take place on orbit starting in January 2013. An astronaut will scan the spinal area of a fellow crew member at 30, 90, and 150 days into flight. Researchers will watch in real time from the ground via streaming video downlinks. Ultrasound images will focus on the cervical and lumbar areas of the spine and surrounding tissues. The test subjects will also undergo pre- and post-flight ultrasound and MRI scans on Earth to provide baseline data.

Ultrasound technology is convenient for use not only in space, but also here on Earth. Due to the portability of the machines, the rapid training methods developed by NASA researchers and the repeatability, ultrasound can offer an inexpensive and scalable alternative to MRIs for healthcare needs. Medical personnel already make use of the training methods developed for the space station crews when using ultrasound in remote areas.

"This technique in spinal ultrasound may someday serve as a clinical data source where standard MRI imaging is not available, even if this seems ambitious," Dulchavsky said. "The vast majority of the global population has no access to an MRI. The in-flight tools such as the interactive Spinal Ultrasound guide can also be used to train other complex procedures, albeit medical or otherwise."

So just why do astronauts get taller in space? Researchers are hoping this study will help answer that question, while also growing medical knowledge of the spine and improving ultrasound methods and procedures.

Rare San Francisco river otter stumps researchers

(AP) ? A rapt crowd followed a trail of bubbles that zipped over the surface of a seaside pond in the ruins of a 19th century bath in San Francisco.

San Francisco's newest star ? the first river otter seen in the city in decades ? surfaced its whiskery head furtively, a mouth full of sea grass. The crowd oohed as large waves pounded rocks just offshore, a briny smell and chill in the air.

The otter ducked back under water and took the sea grass underneath a concrete remnant of the historic baths, where the animal was building a nest.

"We came here to see the baths and this was just a bonus," said Eliza Durkin, who brought her son Jonathan to the site for a school project on historic places.

Beyond tourists, the otter has mystified and delighted conservationists, who are piecing together clues to figure out how he got there. The furry creature was first spotted by birdwatchers in September and has since settled into the City by the Bay.

River otters once thrived in the San Francisco Bay area, but development, hunting and environmental pollution in the 19th and 20th centuries has taken its toll on the once thriving local population.

The critters are a living barometer of water quality - if it's bad they cannot thrive. But new populations being seen north and east of San Francisco are giving hope to conservationists that years of environmental regulations and new technologies are making a difference.

"The fact that this otter is in San Francisco and doing so well in other regions of the Bay Area, it's a good message that there's hope for the watershed," said Megan Isadore, director of outreach and education for the River Otter Ecology Project, a group that studies otter populations further north and in the bay.

The group said until now it had no evidence the creatures had returned to San Francisco, and the last sighting was nearly a half-century ago as best they can tell.

The otter is nicknamed "Sutro Sam" after the old baths, which were named after former San Francisco Mayor Adolph Sutro, who built the building which at the time was an engineering marvel.

The facility opened in 1896 on a cliff facing the Pacific Ocean, its baths fed by the salty ocean tides and a freshwater seep. They were torn down and burned in a fire in 1966, and the building's carcass has long been a tourist draw on the city's rugged, western shoreline.

The aquatic mammal seems to have found the mix of the environment he needs to make a home, to the delight of tourists and local nature lovers.

"They do need freshwater to drink and keep their fur clean," Isadore said. "They are also happy in salt and brackish water ? wherever there is food ? and he is getting freshwater from seeps behind the baths."

River otters can be found in other regions of the San Francisco Bay area. To the north of the Golden Gate, the researchers are tracking a group in Marin County. They have also found river otters in shore-side San Francisco Bay area communities of Alameda, Richmond and Martinez.

"Habitat destruction had an impact on the river otters," said Dorren Gurrola, a science teacher at the Marine Mammal Center, which studies Sam's relatives, the sea otter. "So it's always exciting to see these animals return to their habitat."

Young males like Sam often are the ones that travel away from groups, looking for food. If they find a new, hospitable habitat, others including females may join and create the basis of a new colony, Gurrola said.

While there is no certain reason for Sam's appearance in San Francisco, Isadore and biologists working to unlock more clues have some leads to go on.

He could have swam across the bay's mouth from Marin County, and scat collected from Sam will be analyzed to see if there's a genetic link to that population. But now, Sam seems to be happy swimming around and munching on small fish, including goldfish discarded in the area.

"We're just trying to piece things together in a logical way," Isadore said. "River otters sometimes even stow away on boats, we just don't know."

Hitched: Don't Expect Marriage To Change Everything

Because the world is a mysterious place, they have given that dude who wrote Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus an advice column. Who are ?they?? I don?t know. People who are reassured by ?logic? that basically boils down to ?Men be watchin? football, bitches be shoppin?,? I guess.

And because I only deserve nice things part of the time, I read this advice column. The fact that anyone would ask this stooge for tips on how to unclog a garbage disposal, let alone how to fix one?s relationship, shocks me into a long, slow rubberneck practically every time. But one letter in particular has stuck with me since I read it. In this letter, ?Kissless? in Colorado wonders why getting married didn?t magically make her husband want to kiss her all the time?

She writes:

?I felt his kisses were a bit reserved while we were dating, but I thought over time they would become more passionate as we got closer and closer in our relationship. When that didn?t happen, I started telling him what I wanted and asking him why he wouldn?t kiss me passionately.?

A year into their marriage, she?s fantasizing about other dudes and doesn?t ?want to do something stupid that will jeopardize our marriage.? As we say in Texas: bless this lady?s heart. She?s already done ?something stupid.? She got married. To a dude she knew wasn?t interested in giving her the kind of physical intimacy she wanted.

Marriage doesn?t automatically ?fix? what?s wrong with your partner. Marriage isn?t going to make a cheater commit. Marriage isn?t going to make a deadbeat get a job. Marriage won?t make anyone smarter, funnier, more charming, more thoughtful, more anything you want them to be besides ? more married.

Marriage turns single people who do shit that annoys their partners into married people who do shit that annoys their partners.

Now, couples who have good, open, trusting lines of communication with their partners will address this annoying shit. They?ll say: ?I love when you do this, but I hate when you do that other thing, can we find a way to talk about it and maybe make some changes?? And they will actually talk about it and work through it, and they know whether the problem is being addressed or whether they?re hoping putting a ring on it will put a sock in it. I?m not worried about the good communicators. They?re fine. I?m worried about the people who think, She?ll stop being so work-focused after the honeymoon?or He?ll change his mind about kids in a few years.

I wonder at people who get engaged because they want things to change, and not because they want things to stay the same. When I think back to the night Patrick and I decided to get married, I remember most of all thinking, while sitting out on the porch of the lake house, sipping on Jim Beam and holding his hand in a lawn chair: Please let my life never be different than this, with this man.

If I had any apprehension going into our wedding day, it was ?What if marriage changes everything?? and not, ?Please, let marriage change something.? I?m plenty open to change, and I expect that our life together will bring us a few surprises. But fundamentally I want to meet the future with the man I married, not the man I hope he turns into someday.

What about the flip side to the ?Kissless? letter? Here?s the imagined husband?s version: ?I felt her kisses were a little aggressive while we were dating, but I thought over time they would become more reserved as we got closer and closer in our relationship.? You can?t think or hope or expect or marry anyone into changing; you can talk and work with people into seeing if that?s something they?re willing to do. If, in the end, they?re not changing, for whatever reason? Either accept them as they are and drop the issue forever, or don?t marry ?em in the first place.

But I don?t feel like I can especially fault people who see a wedding as a cure to what ails their relationship, amazed as I might be by anyone who thinks an incompatible kisser is going to be helped by a legal arrangement dressed up with flower arrangements. Because the life that the Wedding Industrial Complex sells us is a life of magical perfection. How else do you get people to buy $10,000 dresses and splurge on the monogrammed napkins, if not to convince them that they?re all just parts of the greatest investment ever?

Marriage and its attendant traditions and expectations have changed significantly just in the last one hundred years or so. Today, we fully expect the vast majority of marriages to be based on mutual love, rather than financial, political or social convenience or obligation. And we expect love to conquer all.

I?ve no doubt that folks who, in years past, entered into marriage out of convenience or obligation hoped their partners would change. But did they expect it? Did they have a plethora of wedding magazines and dress-shilling reality specials painting pretty pictures of their shiny new futures? I can?t help but think that the WIC grows ever stronger with each publication of Modern Bride and season of bridal expos, convincing a new crop of people that a party?s going to convince someone to have five kids or pay down their debt in a timely fashion.

Whatever happened in the past ? hell, maybe affianced folks have always believed that marriage would change their intendeds ? I think today?s relentless hard-sell of the wedding fantasy (and the fantasy wedding) must play an important part in convincing people that a wedding, and marriage, will turn their lives from mundane to magical.

And it comes at us from all angles, from the relentless Facebook ads (I?m still getting them, nine months after my wedding) to the thin, white, beautiful model-brides staring out from the magazine rack, to the precious earnestness of the ?alternative? wedding community (of which you will find me a member). The shill is the same: A wedding! The answer to problems you both did and didn?t know you had!

Because we so rarely talk about not getting married as a reasonable life decision. After all, there?s nothing special to sell to people who just get on with their lives, dating or not dating, cohabitating or not cohabitating, breaking up or giving it another shot. There?s no once-in-a-lifetime dress you buy because you rented a condo. There?s no white dove release for a graduate degree. Nobody wears a tuxedo because the company softball team took first place.

I saw a preview earlier this week for ?The Bachelor,? wherein the announcer teased us with some truly risible bullshit about the upcoming season of ultimate romance, red roses, making out on a beach, crying hysterically in limousines, all that stuff people associate with true love. I wonder if part of the success of the show is that, at the end, they don?t send the couple off to, you know, go on some proper dates and see how they feel about things. They?re sent off to get married, because that?s what happens in the sequel.

But there doesn?t have to be a sequel, y?all. Our lives aren?t rom-coms or pages from pretty wedding magazines; they?re messy and awkward and lovely and fun. The WIC gets us to buy all kinds of stuff we can?t even resell for a tenth of the price on eBay. Anybody want 12 whiskey-stained navy blue polyester tablecloths? I?ll throw in 80 gold polyester napkins as a bonus. But it also sells us the idea that marriage is a cure-all for what ails our relationships, or for what we think ails our partners.

Me? I?m fine with hanging on to the tablecloths and napkins, same as I?ll hang on to Patrick?s snoring, and his tireless dedication to taking the long way home.
