(AP) ? The European Union's executive office on Wednesday said the 17-country eurozone needs a "banking union" that can centrally oversee and ? if needed ? bail out the sector, which has become a weak link in the continent's financial system.

Fears that the cost of bank rescues could cause governments to need bailouts of their own have been fueling Europe's debt crisis in recent months.

Spain is in a particularly bad situation because its banks are not only holding massive amounts of shaky government bonds but also sitting on huge losses on real estate investments. The country's borrowing rates have hit record highs this week as investors worry it does not have the money to save its banks. One of them asked for ?19 billion ($23.6 billion) last week.

But Europe's attempts to address the weakness of some countries' banking sectors has been hindered by the lack of a central authority with the power to tell banks what to do to improve their balance sheets. That power remains in the hands of the dozens of national regulators.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, the European Commission suggested Wednesday that regulation of the entire eurozone banking sector be done centrally and that the cost of bailouts be shared.

"Ambitious steps to accelerate and deepen financial integration may be needed. Already before the crisis, it was acknowledged that the EU model of cross-border banking was not stable," the Commission said in a report on how to deal with the financial crisis which has pushed the shared single currency to the brink of breakup.

Part of the proposal would see the eurozone's permament bailout fund, the ESM, charged with helping pay for bank bailouts. That would protect individual governments from having their public finances overwhelmed by the cost of rescuing a bank.

"Direct recapitalization by the ESM might be envisaged," the Commission's report said.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the ESM should be better able to help out troubled banks across national borders if need be. In the future, "the building blocks could include a banking union with integrated financial supervision and a single deposit guarantee scheme," he said.

Germany, however, has long been against such an arrangement because, as the currency bloc's paymaster, it would fund the lion's share of any expenses the European bailout fund runs into. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said there was no change in the country's views: "The German position on direct recapitalization of banks from the European rescue fund is known."

EU Commissioner Olli Rehn cautioned that the plan might call for the reopening of an EU treaty, a politically risky affair in the best of circumstances.

The European Commission also made specific recommendations to nations mired in the financial crisis on how to manage its national budgets and rein in debt and spending.

Spain, which is currently the focus of the European financial crisis, should be given an extra year ? to 2014 ? to get its budget deficit back within European targets.

Rehn said the Spanish government should be given such an extension only if it can effectively control the excessive spending in the semi-autonomous regions and present "solid two year budget plans for 2013 and 2014."

In this case, "we are ready to consider proposing an extension of the deadline to correct the excessive deficit by one year," Rehn said.

Spanish financial markets improved briefly on the news, with the government's 10-year bond yield edging down. The respite proved short-lived as investors focused on the longer-term challenges facing Spain, which is in its second recession in three year, suffers unemployment of near 25 percent and has not yet made clear where it will find money to fund its latest bank rescue, of lender Bankia.

The commission also recommended that Spain "accelerate the increase in the statutory retirement age," and take steps to reintegrate elderly people in the job market. The commission said Spain should tax labor less and rely more on environmental and consumer spending taxes.

In France, as in many other countries, the Commission recommended the country "adopt labor market measures to ensure that older workers stay in employment longer" as well as take steps to make young people more employable.

The commission recommended that Ireland correct its excessive deficit this year, and take further action to address youth unemployment. It also said Ireland needs to pursue the fight against tax evasion, and simplify the regulatory framework for businesses.

European leaders will consider the Commission's recommendations before making a ruling at a summit in June.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Novated leases | Business 2 ...

Novated leases have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering benefits to employers and employees alike.

What is a novated lease?

This form of lease is basically a way to finance a vehicle. It?s a formal three-party arrangement whereby an employee agrees terms of the lease with a finance company, selects a vehicle and their employer then takes on responsibility for the lease.

Typically, the employer will make payments on behalf of the employee and deducts them from the employee?s pre-tax income. Terms of the agreement may differ slightly. A full novated lease obligates a company to make payments and guarantee the car?s residual value for the term of the lease. A split novated lease dictates that the employee guarantees the value of the car when the lease is up. In terms of popularity of the novated lease, Australia leads the way.

The Advantages

As an employee, novated leases are effectively a way of incorporating a vehicle into your salary package. Put simply, you secure the lease, but your employer makes the lease payments out of your salary through a novation agreement.

A novated lease allows the employer to take the vehicle payments and maintenance costs from an employee?s pre-tax salary. This cuts the employee?s taxable salary and consequently, the amount of income tax they will pay.

Novated leases offer the employee more flexibility with the selection of the vehicle. They have the option to own the car when the term ends or pay out the current lease and begin a new arrangement. As you own the vehicle and the lease is in your name, you?re in control of the care and maintenance and can use it when you want.

For employers, novated leases provide a simple and cost effective method of adding value to an employee?s salary package, which will work wonders for recruitment and staff retention.

Novated leases provide a far more convenient alternative to running a fleet of company cars and if the employee vacates the job, the responsibility for making the payments leaves with them. This means employers no longer have to deal with the costly and time consuming process of managing and disposing of fleet vehicles left behind.

The good news is there?s no risk. If the person in question leaves the company, the lease is instantly the employee?s responsibility and becomes a two-party arrangement between themselves and the finance company.

The Disadvantages

However, there are some negatives associated with this form of vehicle financing for employees. For one, the tax benefits might not be what you expected. Novated leases are more tax-effective for certain types of individuals, namely those in the higher tax brackets, so check this out before you commit. Your ability to negotiate the price of a vehicle could also be limited, as lease companies will sometimes dictate where you purchase your car.

Another good reason to be fully aware of the agreement you?re getting into is that a number of novated leases will contain a variety of clauses, which are renowned for confusing even those familiar with the language and jargon.

I Am Married, Can I Get A Loan Using Only My Credit ... - Realtor.com

questions

Q: I?m newly married and my husband has less than perfect credit but my credit is above a 660. i currently work at a credit union and we are looking to get a home within the next year and I wanted to know if you think that would be possible? If they only will let me get the home loan in my name will they consider both of our income because he makes way more than I do and he has been at his job for more than 4 years? Thanks.
?Anonymous, Appleton, WI

A: You should absolutely be able to qualify for a home based on the limited information you gave me. You should get pre-qualified by a bank or credit union where you work to find out how much you qualify for and how much of a down payment you would need. If you need a great referral for a real estate agent in your area, let me know.
Monique Higginson is Realtor? with Market Source Real Estate in Salt Lake City, UT.

A: Make an appointment with a loan officer and ask him to do a pre-qualification for the purchase of you house. I am sure you will get a realistic answer.
Mercedes Solano is a Realtor? with Amer Ex Realty Inc. in Bellflower, CA.

A: Hi, Although you work for a credit union, there may be a bank or lending company that has the ability to help you. The only people that can tell you if it is possible is a loan officer. I wouldn?t give up on the first one. I know many people who get turned down but didn?t talk to a really good loan officer and could have closed on a home. The alternative is to seek out a way to increase your husband?s credit. Depending on what is on his credit and what type of loans he will qualify for will differentiate between banks.
Suzanne White is a Realtor? with McBride Kelly & Associates in Tampa, FL.

A: You need to speak with a lender not a Realtor?. You say you work at a credit union and that would be the place to start since they know you.
Kathryn Copeland is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Winter Park, FL.

A: I suggest speaking with a local agent in your market, and getting a referral to a good lender. Of course, since you work for the credit union, you may want to speak with one of your loan officers there. The only real problem with credit unions typically is their lack of flexibility with loan programs.
David Welch is a Realtor? with RE/MAX 200 Realty in Winter Park, FL.

'Bridesmaids' Battle: A Movie Awards Funny Face-Off

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, plus Jonah Hill, Zach Galifianakis and Oliver Cooper, vie for Best Comedic Performance this Sunday.

We are now just five days away from the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards, when the fierce competition among the year's best movies comes to an end and we find out who you picked to win it all. For your answers, you'll have to tune in at 9 p.m. ET this Sunday, June 3.

In the comedy categories, "Bridesmaids" and "21 Jump Street" lead a pack of outrageously funny movies with a ton of nominations, but when it comes to Best Comedic Performance, it's every man and woman for themselves.

Here's our rundown of the Best Comedic Performance nominees:

Jonah Hill, "21 Jump Street"
Only one of this year's nominees for Best Comedic Performance took a knife to the shoulder and didn't even notice. For "21 Jump Street," Hill was lean, mean and one of the worst movie cops we've ever seen. Yes, Schmidt and Jenko eventually brought down the high school's drug ring, but watching them fail miserably along the way made for classic comedy.

Kristen Wiig, "Bridesmaids"
Comedy is hard enough when you have to take the words from a page and make them funny. Kristen Wiig did one better: She co-wrote the words on the page and then made them hilarious. As the fearless, unfortunate leader of one of last year's biggest comedies, Wiig proved she is indeed ready for prime time, that she could lead a movie, and that you should never eat Brazilian before heading to a wedding-dress fitting.

Melissa McCarthy, "Bridesmaids"
The Melissa McCarthy people were familiar with before "Bridesmaids" was anything but her character, Megan. She typically played sweet, feminine characters, like Sookie on "Gilmore Girls." For "Bridesmaids," she stripped away everything from the recognizable McCarthy and became the national-security-obsessed puppy-hoarder and scene-stealer that earned every bit of an Academy Award nomination.

Oliver Cooper, "Project X"
You'll never throw the biggest and best party of all time, unless you add an element of danger just to mix things up. For the three friends in "Project X," Oliver Cooper's Costa was that guy. He's the one who will always have the perfectly timed sarcastic quip to pair with his sweater vest.

Zach Galifianakis, "The Hangover Part II"
He once was a lone wolf, but in the first "Hangover," movie Alan found his wolf pack and roofied his way into America's heart. For the second time around, we got even more Alan but a lot less hair. Even if "Hangover Part II" had the same story as "Part I," more Alan is never a bad thing.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Political Polarization 'Dangerous,' Psychologist Says

CHICAGO - For the first time in American political history, Democrats and Republicans have sorted themselves into a perfect left-right split, a prominent political psychologist said this week, calling the result a "dangerous era" in U.S. politics.

Traditionally, political parties have been coalitions of broad groups of people, based more on industry, region and interest group than basic morals, University of Virginia psychologist Jonathan Haidt said here during a lecture at the annual meeting of the Association of Psychological Science. Since the 1970s and 1980s, however, Americans have increasingly sorted themselves by

liberalism and conservatism, resulting in two political parties that seem almost alien to one another.

We've never had a perfect left-right sort before, and now we do," said Haidt, author of "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion" (Pantheon, 2012). This is troubling, he said, because people tend to cluster around their moral in-group and view outsiders with only suspicion, not understanding.

"You engage all these tribal moral dynamics," Haidt said. [The History of Human Aggression]

The basics of morals

The first psychologists to study the psychology of ideology and morals focused on two main issues: harm versus care, and fairness and judgment. Haidt and his colleages, however, have found evidence that humans base their moral code on far more than "does it hurt someone?" or "is it fair?"

In fact, Haidt has added four more moral dimensions to the mix, bringing the grand total of basic moral drivers to six. The first three ? harm and care, fairness and justice, and liberty versus oppression ? motivate both liberals and conservatives, he said. Liberals tend to care about harm and care most, and conservatives least, but everyone takes these issues into consideration.

How these issues manifest can depend a bit on ideology. Liberals, for example, worry more about inequality for inequality's sake. Conservatives worry more about proportionality, asking if everyone is putting in the work to get their benefits. Both are ways to think about fairness, but that doesn't mean the left and right can't have screaming fights over which is more moral.

Likewise, Haidt said, absolutely no one likes to feel oppressed. But the left tends to talk more about businesses and the rich as oppressors, as in the Occupy Wall Street movement, which protests the wealthiest "1 percent," while the right worries about government oppression, as in Tea Party protests festooned with "Don't Tread On Me" flags. [Rising Rancor: One Nation, Divisible By Politics]

What conservatives care about

Beside these three more-or-less shared values, Haidt has identified three more that matter only to conservatives. (In these studies, conservatism and liberalism refer to social beliefs, such as beliefs about gay marriage, not economic beliefs such as how much someone likes the free market. These social beliefs occur along a continuum, with the moral factors on a continuum of importance as well.)

The first conservative-only belief is loyalty and betrayal. People on the political right feel more strongly about group loyalty than people on the left, who tend to be ambivalent about groups, Haidt said. John Lennon's "Imagine," in which he sings about national borders melting away, is an example.

"It's because of these sorts of arguments that come from the left quite often that the right has a field day charging the left with treason," Haidt said.

The second conservative-only value is authority. Hierarchy and authority tend to be more important on the right ? consider religious beliefs that "God is in charge" ? while the left prefers to subvert authority. Leftist anarchists, for example, sometimes rally around the slogan "no gods, no masters."

Finally, conservatives worry about issues of sanctity, while liberals are more likely to take a "nothing is sacred" position. In the realm of sexual purity, for example, conservatives are much more likely than liberals to care about sexual sanctity and issues like remaining a virgin until marriage, Haidt said. Even flag-burning falls under the realm of sanctity. The best predictor of how much a conservative will hate flag-burning is how strongly he or she feels that some things are sacred, he said.

The danger of moralized politics

The danger, Haidt said, comes from humans' innate tendency toward tribalism. In the days of the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam war, there were liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. Today, that's hardly so. [The Awa: Faces of a Threatened Tribe]

Looking back at political polarization in Congress in the last century, "the bad news is that things get worse slowly and then they get worse quickly," Haidt said. "The good news is that the House [of Representatives] is now so polarized that it can't get any worse."

What that means is that major votes are now almost entirely along party lines. There is debate over whether the American public, not just the political elite, is increasingly polarized, but either way, the result has been a combative climate in Washington, D.C.

The mid-20th century period when polarization was low was an anomaly in history, Haidt said, and it's unlikely we'll get back to that point. But being as polarized as America is now is dangerous, he said. When politics are tied inextricably to morals, everything becomes sacred, from guns to flags to race. And when sacred values are threatened, people lash out. Debates are no longer disagreement, they're treason. And political opponents aren't just people with a different point of view.

"The worst person in the world is not your enemy," Haidt said. "It's the apostate or the traitor on your own team."

Brown calls on Harvard to 'correct record' on Elizabeth Warren's heritage

Sen. Scott Brown wants to know why Harvard listed his rival, Elizabeth Warren, as a native American professor. The issue has not tipped the race yet, but it could, the Brown camp says.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / May 25, 2012

Sen. Scott Brown (R) of Massachusetts said Friday that Harvard Law School should "correct the record" regarding its past listing of Elizabeth Warren, his Senate-race rival, as a minority faculty member.

The issue has emerged as a controversy in recent weeks in what is shaping up to be the nation's top Senate race, as it became known that Ms. Warren had in the past classified herself as native American, based on a self-avowed ancestral connection, although she claims no current affiliation with an Indian community.

"The Boston Globe today has a story that states that Harvard may have violated federal guidelines in the reporting of diversity information because of what Elizabeth Warren told them," Senator Brown said in a statement released by his campaign. "I call on Harvard President Faust to immediately correct the record with the relevant federal agencies and uphold Harvard's 400-year-old tradition of abiding by the truth."

The freshman senator's nudge to Harvard comes after his campaign has also issued calls for Warren herself to "come clean" on the matter.

So far, important details on the issue remain murky, in part because Warren has not asked her employers (at Harvard and, before that, at the University of Pennsylvania) to release personnel records related to her hiring. Here are some things that are known: She placed herself on a list of "minority" law professors in a national directory of law schools during the 1980s and early '90s, and Harvard claimed she was a native American faculty member, but by the late 1990s she had dropped her name from the directory's minority listing.

While the two rivals are campaigning on numerous policy differences, the question of Warren's self-listing as a minority has become the campaign's most prominent issue that touches on personal character and credibility. The question takes on added significance because Warren has built her public persona in part by pushing for greater accountability by Wall Street banks. Her critics, including some Democrats, say she has failed to show accountability herself.

A poll this week showed the two candidates virtually equal in their support from likely voters in Massachusetts. Warren must also win the Democratic nomination in a Sept. 6 primary, and so far is running far ahead of challenger Marisa DeFranco, an immigration lawyer.

In Friday's statement, Brown pushed back against Warren for implying that he's raising a nonissue. "This Native American controversy is a problem of Elizabeth Warren's own making. She falsely described herself as a minority and some of the schools where she worked relied on that information to misrepresent the diversity of their faculty," Brown said.

Warren has said she did not seek to use minority status for advantage when seeking teaching jobs, including at Harvard. She has said she wasn't aware of being viewed as a minority hire until she saw it in recent news reports.

"I listed myself in the directory in the hopes that it might mean that I would be invited to a luncheon, a group, something that might happen with people who are like I am," Warren said on May 2, according to a report in the Boston Herald the next day. "Nothing like that ever happened, that was clearly not the use for it, and so I stopped checking it off."

One loose end in the saga is very basic: Does Warren really have native American roots? She grew up in Oklahoma, a state where a goodly number of residents have a trace or more of Indian ancestry.

Remains found at campsite could be missing hiker

By James Eng, msnbc.com

AP

According the the Eagle County Sheriff's office, this photo of James Nelson was taken in October 2010 on the day Nelson headed off on his hike. He never returned.

Updated at 1:48 p.m. ET: Human remains found near a campsite in a wilderness area in western Colorado could be those of a Chicago man who was reported missing after failing to return from a planned five-day hike in 2010, authorities say.

A camper scouting campsites near the ghost town of Holy Cross City on Friday came upon a site that apparently was used by James Nelson, 31. He was reported missing on Oct. 3, 2010, by his fiancee, when he failed to return from a five-day, 25-mile hike of the Holy Cross Wilderness Area near Minturn, Colo.

On Saturday, Vail Mountain Rescue and detectives from the Eagle County Sheriff?s Office hiked to the location and discovered human remains nearby.

The remains were turned over to the Eagle County coroner for positive identification and cause of death. A call to the coroner's office?on Sunday was not immediately returned.

A journal and notebook found at the campsite indicated that Nelson may have been suffering from altitude sickness at the time of his disappearance, said Jessie Mosher, a spokeswoman for the Eagle County Sheriff's Office. "We have reason to believe that might have played a factor in his disappearance," she told msnbc.com on Sunday.

Other items recovered at the site indicate that some of Nelson?s gear is missing. Among the missing items are a camera, GPS unit and a camp stove, the sheriff's office said.

Since the human remains were found about 120 feet from the campsite, it's possible someone else had passed through the campsite and took those items without realizing there was a dead person nearby, Mosher said.

Eagle County Shriff's Office

Campsite in the Holy Cross Wilderness area believed to have been used by James Nelson of Chicago, who was reported missing in October 2010 after failing to return from a five-day hike.

Nelson?s proposed route included the summit of 14,005-foot Mount of the Holy Cross, but he did not sign the summit register, according to the Real Vail.

The Holy Cross Wilderness Area?is made up of some the most rugged terrain in Colorado and has about 164 miles of trails. Its elevation ranges roughly between 8,000 feet to 14,000 feet.

Nelson, an experienced hiker, worked for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Chicago office, the Chicago Tribune reported. He studied religion at McCormick Theological Seminary and Chicago Theological Seminary in Hyde Park and planned to teach theology at a university, his mother told the Tribune in 2010.

Looking for Writers for Scotland and London Websites

Beautiful Scotland

I?m still working on the next installment of my Journey to $9,000 series but, damn, those posts take forever! Seriously. So instead of rushing through them, I?m taking my time to try to make them really good resources with a good dose of inspiration and am working on some other projects at the same time. Here?s one of them? well, two of them?

The website I bought at the end of last year, Blighty Traveller, has been a ridiculously huge success. It?s pretty much been responsible for adding thousands of dollars to my earnings each month. Plus it does it in the most ideal way ? people pay me to give me free content. Yep! I don?t really do anything except add the post and find and edit a photo to go with it. All of the content on that site these days is paid. I know? it makes me feel a bit icky to admit that but the content I?m getting is actually of a really good quality. Much better than I?d get by outsourcing through a site like Textbroker and much better than I?d write myself ? mostly because I wouldn?t write anything myself. So it seems like the perfect business model. At least for now while businesses are paying for this sort of thing.

So with that in mind, I?m making an attempt to copy the format and concept of the site but with slightly different topics. I?m working on putting together a similar site focused on travel in Scotland and one on travel in London. The idea and look of the site will be the same, but instead of focusing on England (and a bit on the rest of the UK), the sites will be strictly London and Scotland traveller info. It?ll end up being a trio of related sites with the same design and similar site names but with different (but related) topics.

I know? London and Scotland, it?s been done before a million times, already. But I?m confident I can make good sites that will be strong earners for me in the future. Here?s why:

  • I?m very familiar with both places (I lived in London for 5 years so know it pretty well and my family is Scottish and I?ve spent plenty of time there).
  • I have a network of old, trusted, related sites to link to these new sites to help with SEO.
  • I have other similar websites that draw in potential advertisers and I know that suggesting other related sites on different IP addresses usually results in extra ad sales.
  • I?m willing to pay writers to help get the content built up?

?that?s where you might come in! I?m hoping to have London and Scotland-based blogger types help me build up the content for these sites, and I?m paying! Here?s the deal:

  • I can pay GBP20 per article of around 700-1000 words (into a Paypal account).
  • I can probably afford 10 articles per site per month.
  • I?ll probably only be looking for about 50 articles per site total. So this isn?t going to be a career move for you, just a way to earn some extra cash doing (hopefully) something you enjoy.
  • I?ll need original articles. If you?re a blogger whose already written about a particular subject, it?s totally fine to write about it again for my site. Just make sure to start fresh and maybe put a different spin on it to make it unique. Moving paragraphs around and changing a few sentences on something you?ve already written won?t work for me.

Here?s who I?m looking for:

  • Someone living in Scotland (doesn?t matter where) and someone living in London. People who enjoy travelling around and checking tourist things out. Foreigners in these places would be good because that?s the market the site is for, but locals also works because you?ll have those local insights. Just be living there.
  • Ideally I would like to work with as few people as possible per site so if you?ve got the time, eagerness and ability, I?d consider waiting longer to get the content to work with the right person.
  • My price per article isn?t great so I?m not looking for professional writer types. Bloggers starting out would be ideal because you?re probably familiar with WordPress and writing for the web, I can check out your blog to see your writing style and give you a bit of exposure (I won?t be giving out links at the bottom of each post but I will add you to a contributor page with a link to your blog).
  • I want someone who knows the basics of WordPress (so that the articles can be typed directly into my WordPress admin panel with a bit of formatting, choosing categories etc).
  • Someone who writes in a fun way but is direct and can also take note of the boring but important details like prices, opening hours of things, etc. I?ve never been a fan of filler like describing the way the flowers smelled on the beautiful summer day etc. I don?t care. I want facts served up with a nice helping of personality.
  • Someone who has the time to churn out 4 to 6 articles a month would be great. If you think you can get me the full 10 articles a month and I like your writing, then I?d be happy to work with just one person per site.

If this sounds like something you?d like to work with me on, please get in touch! Email me at travoholic@yahoo.com with this info:

  • Name and which site you want to work on. So? do you live in Scotland or London, basically.
  • If you have a blog, link to three posts you think highlight your writing style.
  • If you don?t have a blog, send me three files to give me an idea of your writing style (preferably to do with tourism-related stuff) or links to any writing you?ve done online.
  • How many articles you think you could manage in a month.
  • Three suggestions for articles that you?d writer first. Come up with titles for the suggestions.
  • How confident you are using WordPress.
  • Any questions you have about working on this.

I?m looking forward to hearing from you!

Has anyone else ever hired writers directly to work on a new site? This is all pretty new territory for me? I tend to outsource to Textbroker but I feel like I?ll like working with two (or a few) individuals more closely rather than the faceless people I find through Textbroker. Well, I?m sure they do have faces (I hope) but it?s all just so impersonal. I?m liking the relationships that I?m building as I work on my living in Kampala site with a team of writers (more on this in a post soon) so I?m hoping to establish the same thing with these two sites. It?s nice working with other people and it?s also nice when they get excited about the project as well? really pumps me up too.

So? we?ll see how it goes!

First video taken with Google Glasses shared

2 hrs.

Google has publicly unveiled new photos and the first video from the real view of their augmented reality glasses prototype. The images show what the wearer sees while reading a newspaper, catching a football in the backyard and helping a smiling child play on the jungle gym.

Such views don't necessarily represent anything people haven't seen before with head-mounted portable cameras. But they do hint at how Google Glasses could enable many people beyond geeky life-casters to capture a diverse array of moments in their lives ? the video shows the bouncy viewpoint of the Google Glasses wearer doing flips on a trampoline.

Google tech lead Max Braun showed off the photos and video at the Google + Photographer's Conference on May 23.

The Internet search giant has yet to show off real images or photos of how the glasses could seamlessly integrate virtual information with what a person sees in the real world. Its earlier unveiling of "Project Glass" included a concept video that imagined a wearer getting social calendar reminders and map directions in his field of view.

Still, many members of the public still seem enthusiastic about just having a pair of glasses with a small camera attached. One of the top comments on the YouTube video of the trampoline jumping simply stated "Shut up and take my money!"

The most popular comment of all had a perhaps tongue-in-cheek suggestion for using the Google Glasses ? "Good for POV [point-of-view] porn."

Do You Have a Positive Attitude or Negative Attitude - Self Help Daily

Quote About Being Positive

My mom once worked in a building with a woman she often spoke highly of. The woman?s name was Claudia ? a fact that kind of amazes me.? Not the lovely name, so much, but the fact that I remember it over 30 years later. Don?t quiz me on the last name, though. I?d never get anywhere close ? for all I know she didn?t even have a last name.?? Claudia had one name, like Cher, and her fame amongst her co-workers rivaled the star?s fame.

My mom would say things like, ?I have to get my hair done tomorrow because Claudia will be at that office luncheon and I?m not standing near her with this hair.?? Or she?d say, ?An UPS man came into the building today and he just stood around talking? no doubt he was waiting for Claudia??? For about 2 years I heard about this captivating woman before I ever met her.? Basically I imagined that she looked like? Ginger, from Gilligan Island?s fame.? If anyone ever said someone was pretty, my young mind pictured Ginger in all her shiny, wiggling glory.

When I finally met Claudia, I thought, ?Ginger? No way. She looks more like a Howell? and I don?t mean Mrs. Howell.? When momma introduced us, I even glanced behind the smiling woman, assuming that Claudia had to be hidden behind her.? Just as I was wondering about my mom?s eyesight, Claudia began to cast her spell. She smiled a lot, seemed to enjoy being who she was even more than Ginger enjoyed being Ginger, and struck me as someone who was absolutely in love with life.

My mom had to take a call in her office (seriously, how did anyone ever get by before cell phones?), so I was left with Claudia in her tiny little office filled with pictures of her kids and cats for about 20 minutes. She talked about these kids and cats, school lunches, my English teacher. her boss?s wife, my mom, and Dinky?s Dinner (a restaurant up town).? She was in favor of all of these people and places.? If her words had faces, they?d all be smiling.? Later, over supper, my mom told me that she was always like that.? Always positive, happy, and glad to be alive. She was, actually, pretty sick (I don?t remember the disease any more than I do her last name), and she had (in the last year) lost her mom who she was extremely close to. Her husband had died when their children were very small. She?d never remarried and still wore her wedding ring.? And yet she smiled from the inside out.? She radiated happiness.

It left quite an impression on a young me.

Fast forward to 2012. Whoosh!? Man, oh man, I get so annoyed with negative people. I?m pretty sure my peace-loving, non-violent self tweeted something out a few days ago about wanting to ?tase? surly people in the mouth. Yep, that was me.? Negative Nellies (or Petes, Carrols, Clarks, Debbies?) make me all kinds of crazy. They can just be thankful I don?t own a taser or even know where to find one.

Years ago, I watched my dad go though more surgeries and illnesses than most people even SEE in their lifetime, let alone LIVE.? During a particularly bad bout one year (he hadn?t been home from the hospital a week), he fell and broke his hip. I cried for him so much I thought my eyes would float out of my head. When I went to see him in the hospital, my eyes were still red and swollen.? My spirit was as broken as his hip.? I tried to put makeup on the swelling and a band aid across my heart before walking into his room.? He had been so proud of being home and so HAPPY to get out of the hospital, only to land (literally) right back in the hospital bed ? facing surgery. I knew how crushed he had to be.

I was certain that his spirits would need lifting.

Wrong.

There the man was, lying in his hospital bed ? hooked back up to IVs, reaching for his cup of ice. When he saw me, he smiled a big old smile and just kind of shook his head like, ?Can you believe it..?? I said, ?Look what you?ve gotten yourself into!?? He said, ?I thought I?d change things up a little.?? I told him I hoped he was proud of himself and with the one hand that wasn?t hooked up, he gestured with the ?little bit? sign.

The man did not complain. Ever.? He never asked, ?Why me??? He was never surly or mean and bitterness was as far removed from him as self-consciousness was from Ginger.

I thought back to Claudia, but more importantly to Daddy recently (yes, right after the tasing tweet).? I was trying to figure out why negative people and sour pusses get to me so badly.? I think I hit upon it the minute I pictured my father in a hospital gown smiling and shaking his head. How dare they?? How dare anyone waste a precious moment on earth ? a precious moment of health ? griping about this or that?? How dare they think they have the right to treat other?s as though they?re second class citizens?

How dare anyone be surly?? What in the world gives them the right?

You know, it just occurred to me ? what my dad would say if he heard me ranting about the surly Sams and Sammanthas of the world.? He?d say, ?You can?t change people. You have to just let them be how they are.? Just make sure you don?t become like them.?

But, dad, I?m trying to save the world, here!!!

He, and my mom too for that matter, were BIG on not letting other people change you.? I must have heard those words a billion times.? If I was upset because a friend had disappointed me, I knew I?d hear, ?Don?t let it change you.. Be glad you aren?t like they are.?

Over the years, I took their approach a step further (the self help diva in me began to show herself I suppose).? I began to examine my own heart and mind when I?d come across an undesirable trait in someone else.? If someone?s lack of will power struck me upside the head, I?d examine my own life ? asking if there were areas I grappled with will power.?? A few nights ago, a surly, sour individual made the hairs on my neck stand up and I asked myself, ?Do you ever act that way??

Thank God? unlike the will power quiz? I passed this one with flying colors.? Doughnuts and chocolate may put the smack down on my will power, but I?m simply not a surly person.? Thank you, God. It?s ugly!? Seriously, negativity and surliness are horrifically ugly things. They can turn the most attractive person in the world to the homeliest in no time at all.? No one likes negative, rude, judgmental, or surly people.

So, I guess what I?m trying to say is? Before complaining, sighing, or whining about something ? ask yourself, ?Do I really want to come across like that??? Think of the surliest person you know ? ask yourself why on earth you?d want to look like that!?? If someone doesn?t speak to you when you speak to them ? or they make a rude, unpleasant face when you come into the room ? ask yourself this question: ?Do I behave like that to anyone??

If someone overreacts to just about everything in life, ask yourself, ?Do I do that?!?

Life lessons are everywhere ? they?re all around us. Sometimes they?re in abundance in the oddest places ? in the people who drive us the battiest.

I learned that just last night.? I was watching ? and enjoying the heck out of ? a baseball game.? My St. Louis Cardinals won, so it was a great night for me.? Although my cat Alexa and I were lying in the den floor ? snacking and loving life ? I kept reading some negative tweeters tweeting on Twitter (say that three times fast).? They were complaining about this player, complaining about the announcers, griping about this? griping about that? It started to unnerve me and sour my wonderful evening.? I put my ipod touch away and had a much better time!

I just can?t figure out why some people think they have to complain about everything?!?! Why are there so many people who are never, never, never satisfied?? The announcers are fine ? they?re great!? The players want to do better than any of us? could possibly hope for them to ? it?s they?re livelihood.? Why not just watch a game and look for good things to talk (or tweet) about?? It?d make you a lot happier to look for the good than to keep searching for the bad.

Attitudes are kind of addictive ? if you try your best to have a positive, upbeat, and happy attitude, before long you won?t even have to try? it?ll simply be second nature.? On the flip side (the ugly one), if you?re constantly surly, negative, and complain with every breath - it won?t be long before this attitude will define you.

The world has enough people who are modernized versions of Scrooge and humanized versions of the Grinch.? Don?t be one of them. Be the sort of person like Claudia or, even better, my dad.? The type of person people are talking about for all the right reasons long after you?re gone.

Forensics ferret out fire beetle secret

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Criminal cases can often only be solved using forensics to piece together physical evidence and reconstruct what happened. Prof. Dr. Helmut Schmitz from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Bonn and Dr. Herbert Bousack from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungzentrum J?lich went through the same experience. Prof. Schmitz has been researching fire beetles of the genus Melanophila and their sophisticated IR sensors, which these pyrophilous insects use to detect forest fires, for many years. This is a very special ecological niche. "It allows the beetle larvae to freely eat their way through the wood because the trees, which have been killed by great heat, can no longer fight back, and there are hardly any predators that would eat them in freshly burned forests," the Bonn zoologist reported.

A tiny sphere senses changes in pressure due to heat

Meanwhile, with the help of the Forschungszentrum caesar in Bonn and the Technische Universit?t Dresden, the researchers have unraveled the functional principle of this so-called photo-mechanical beetle infrared sensor, and they have started to work on a technical reconstruction of this natural prototype. Tiny cuticula spheres of the beetles' IR receptors ? at 0.02 mm, smaller than the diameter of a fine hair ? are filled with water and absorb IR radiation very well. Due to the fact that they heat up, the water in particular expands suddenly, and the resulting change in pressure is immediately detected by highly sensitive mechano-sensitive sensory cells. "However, an important question had remained unanswered ? how sensitive is the sensor?" asked Prof. Schmitz. This question could be best answered by equipping Melanophila beetles with mini transmitters on their search for forest fires. "Then we would be able to log the distance flown to the burnt area and, based on this distance, calculate the minimum required heat radiation the beetles are attracted by," explained the zoologist. But at a length of about 1 cm, the beetles are too small to carry a transmitter for long distances.

In 1925, a blaze destroyed a large oil storage facility in California

The resourceful scientists turned to a past event, which proved helpful. In August 1925, a large oil depot in Coalinga, California, went up in flames. "Reports from that era mentioned that the huge blaze attracted masses of charcoal beetles (Melanophila consputa)," explained Prof. Schmitz. Since the fire location was in the forest-less Central Valley of California, the beetles must have flown in from a great distance. Most likely, they came from large forests on the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada about 130 kilometers away, where there had been large forest fires in the two preceding years. "On such burnt areas, beetles multiply en masse, and after they emerged, they went to look for forest fires in the subsequent summers," said Prof. Schmitz. A forested area about 28 kilo?meters from the burning oil tanks in the San Benito Mountain Natural Area north of Coalinga seems rather unlikely as the source of the beetles since forest fires had not been reported in this area prior to 1925.

Based on a model from fire protection technology

Dr. Herbert Bousack, an engineer from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich performed the calculations for modeling the sensitivity of the sensor. "The Coalinga fire is a good match for this simulation," Dr. Bousack reported. First however, many parameters had to be researched painstakingly, such as the size of the fire, or the weather conditions. "More than 85 years after the event, such data was hard to obtain." The engineer based his mathematical simulation on various fire models such as are used in assessing of fire risks for storage tank facilities. "We adapted these technical guidelines for our purposes, which allowed us to fall back on proven experiences," said the engineer.

According to the math, the beetle sensor is incredibly sensitive

The result was amazing. "According to our calculations, the infrared sensors of Melanophila beetles should be able to sense signals even if they are below the level of thermal noise," reported Dr. Bousack. Obviously, the beetles rely on stochastic resonance. "This method enables them to detect weak periodic signals that are normally superimposed by the noise," explained the engineer. According to the results of the calculations, the sensors can detect the tiniest amounts of heat - roughly comparable to the energy resolution of radio telescopes. "Our simulations and calculations make it seem quite probable that the IF sensors of pyrophilous Melanophila beetles are more sensitive than uncooled infra?red sensors currently available in the market," Prof. Schmitz summarized the outcome. "Additional efforts to implement this natural prototype technologically will be required." So, they might be able to revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires.
