Verizon reverses on $2 fee for one-time payments (AP)

NEW YORK ? After a customer backlash, Verizon Wireless on Friday dropped a plan to start charging $2 for every payment subscribers make over the phone or online with their credit or debit cards.

In a statement on its website Friday, the company said "customer feedback" prompted the decision to drop the "convenience fee" it wanted to introduce on Jan. 15.

Verizon wanted to steer people to electronic check payments, which are cheaper, and automatic credit card payments, which are more reliable.

A petition on Change.org against the fees had gathered more than 95,000 names by Friday afternoon, a day after Verizon, the country's largest cellphone company, announced the fees. The petition was set up by Molly Katchpole, who earlier this year started a successful campaign to make Bank of America drop a $5-per-month fee for debit-card use.

Payment processors for power companies usually charge "convenience fees" of up to $5 for every payment made by phone or online, but cellphone companies haven't taken the step yet. The furor against Verizon hints that they may have to wait further.

Verizon Wireless serves 91 million phones and other devices on accounts that pay the company directly, and more who pay indirectly through other companies. It's a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. of New York and Vodafone Group PLC of Britain.

Africa's fire history 'unlocked'

A model has helped shed light on how human-started fires shaped Africa's landscape, researchers report.

Before human activity became widespread, most fires were caused by lightning strikes during the continent's wet seasons, they said.

As the human population expanded, more fires occurred during the dry season, triggering a shift in the impact of fires on Africa's ecology, they added.

The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"People have always been aware that there have been a lot of wildfires in Africa," said co-author Sally Archibald, senior researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, South Africa.

"When we started getting satellite data, it became even more apparent that there is a lot of burning that happens.

"This made people concerned; they were worried that there was too much fire in Africa."

Human impact

Dr Archibald explained that the team decided to develop the model in order to understand current conditions, and whether there was now too much burning compared with the time when humans were not so prevalent and influencing landscapes' "fire regimes".

It has been estimated that early humans could have had the ability to start fires about 300,000 years ago, but the real impact was from about 70,000 years ago as human populations became more widespread.

"We really cannot make good (conservation) decisions unless we can understand how humans have manipulated fire," added Dr Archibald.

"It is really interesting that we are the only organism in the world to have harnessed fire, and we need to understand how that may have changed the systems in which we live."

The theoretical model, which focuses on Africa's grassland habitats, took data on how people have used fire and linked it to archaeological knowledge of how human populations in the region evolved.

Dr Archibald told BBC News that one of the paper's key insights was that, according to the model, wildfires were currently at their "lowest level for the past 40,000 years or so".

"There is less wildfire in Africa now, even though it looks like there is such a lot when you look at the satellite data, because of the way that people have been using the landscape."

She explained that the model could be used to help national parks develop fire management policies.

"They are trying to develop fire management policies and they want to burn their landscapes in a way that will maintain biodiversity," she said.

"That becomes quite a tricky question in Africa because you cannot just say 'well, I will not light fires at all, only natural fires will be allowed'.

"People have been in Africa for over a million years, so you cannot try to suppress all human fires. You have to include humans as part of your system, and fire managers still need some guidance on what is the best way to burn these systems and yet maintain biodiversity."

Take these steps to improve finances in 2012

Every January, it's the same drill. This is the year you will cut your debt, save money and spend more wisely.

    1. Zookeeper: Polar bear cub will fare better than Knut

Siku has drawn worldwide attention like Knut, who was born in captivity in Berlin and died at the age of 4. But Siku ?will...

    2. Sister ?surprised? TV producer won?t fight extradition
    3. Britain's Prince Philip leaves hospital
    4. Hackers target supporters of security firm
    5. Still storing leftovers? Make a delicious hangover breakfast

And you, like millions of others, will fail again for no good reason.

Want to break the cycle of broken New Year's resolutions? The professionals say you've got to get automated, get educated, and get over the fear of making changes.

But first things first.

Get rid of those hazy promises to yourself about your fiscal behavior. Sit down and make a list about exactly what you want to achieve, advises Scott Halliwell, a USAA financial planner. Designate actionable items for each month, starting with spending January to get your budget and savings plan on track.

There's a difference, for example, between "I want to increase my savings," and "I want to have $1,000 more in the bank by April 1."

How do you get from here to there? Here's how you start:

Automate as much as possible
One key way to stay on track is to make things as easy as possible. "If you don't automate it, oftentimes things won't get done," Halliwell said. "Life will get in the way."

Setting up automatic savings is easy on most bank websites. Doing so makes you much more likely to keep that resolution to save more. Add auto bill pay, and you will take a big step toward avoiding late charges that run up costs unnecessarily. Making payments on time is also the single most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy credit score.

Automation doesn't mean you can avoid periodically checking on your progress, however. At least once a month, designate a day to go over your performance during the prior few weeks, and make any adjustments that are necessary.

Check your credit reports
Everyone is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three major agencies, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

The data in these reports is what's used to determine your credit score, which in turn is what banks and credit card companies use to decide if they'll lend to you and at what interest rate. You'll get a good picture of what problems exist that can drive down your credit score, like late payments or a forgotten bill that went to collections. And you may find mistakes that could be hurting your score as well.

A low credit score can cost you big. The difference between a 4 percent interest rate and a 5 percent rate on a 30-year, $200,000 mortgage, for instance, is nearly $42,000 over the life of the loan.

By spacing the free reports out to one every four months, you can also monitor your records for unexpected activity that may indicate you're a victim of identity theft. To learn more and start the process of obtaining your free reports, visit www.annualcreditreport.com.

To take things a step further, you can visit www.myfico.com, which is offering a free credit score to those who sign up for a 10-day free trial of its credit monitoring service. After the 10 days, the service is $14.95 per month.

Take advantage of all your job benefits.
You may be up to speed on how much your co-payments cost, but are you aware of all the benefits offered through your health insurance? Log in to your insurance company website to find out if you're eligible for reimbursement or discounts on health club memberships or programs to help you with weight loss or quitting smoking. You may even be able to check a few other resolutions off your list at the same time you save a few dollars.

Likewise, many companies and unions offer extra benefits that are often overlooked, from discounts on cell phone plans and computer purchases, to reduced price travel and entertainment, pet insurance, college test preparation programs and even legal advice. Ask your human resources department or visit UnionPlus.org to learn how you can shave dollars off spending you'll likely be doing anyway.

Rebalance your investments
Rebalancing involves adjusting the mix of stocks, bonds and other assets you hold to keep them appropriate for your stage of life and the amount of risk you're willing to take. In general, most advisors say the older you are, the less risk you want to take, which means a higher portion of bonds than stocks.

The first step of the process is setting the targets for what sort of mix you should have. "For all of us, those targets change as time goes by," said Christine Benz, director of personal finance at Morningstar Inc. "What's right for you when you're 25 is not necessarily right for you when you're 40."

Even if all you have is a 401(k) plan through work, it's important to make sure the funds you picked when you first enrolled are the best choices for you now. If you own additional mutual funds or have an IRA, those items should be considered as well, to create as complete a picture as possible.

The market volatility of the past few years adds to the importance of taking a periodic look at your holdings, but may make it more difficult to decide the best steps to take. Rebalancing often seems counterintuitive, Benz noted, because it can involve selling holdings that are doing well and shifting that money to investments that have underperformed recently.

So especially if you haven't made any adjustments in the last few years, it may be worth spending a few dollars to enlist the help of a financial advisor. An advisor can be an even bigger help if the thought of dealing with investments battered by the economy leaves you full of fear.

"The hardest part for rebalancing for most people comes down to the practical application for doing it," said USAA's Halliwell. "One of the things that getting outside help can do for you is help remove some of the emotion."

China-Based Hacker Teams Threaten US Companies

The US cyber threat from China may be the work of as few as 12 China-based hacker teams. Distinct group digital signatures have enabled US cybersecurity experts to link the teams to various cyber attacks, not just directed at the US government, but to US companies of all sizes. According to a USA Today article, the hacker teams are backed by the Chinese government, and without reciprocal agreements in place, there is little that the US can do to stop them. The cyber attacks from China began as early as 2001 and have increased in intensity over the last three years.

The Chinese government denies sanctioning hacking. Companies don't have an exact dollar loss to quantify the amount of intellectual property stolen, although Bloomberg estimates the loss at $500 million in the last year. China-based hacker teams are seemingly indiscriminate in what they take, preferring to sweep up as much data as possible from as many companies as they can hack.

Traditionally, US companies that have been hacked have been reluctant to reveal the extent of the damage they suffered, but Google was one that did speak out after realizing that their experiences could serve to enlighten other companies and possibly to help push the US government to take action. Certainly, after alarming reports, to get their arms around the scope of the problem the administration invoked national security powers from the Cold War era to compel certain large companies to discuss proprietary information that might be related to cyber attacks. According to an earlier Bloomberg account, this was done in conjunction with concerns that China might be embedding spyware into hardware exported to the US.

Small and midsized companies need to be aware that they too can be targeted by hackers from China. Bloomberg reports that China has gone after technology sectors across all industries, including those in "some of the most obscure corners of the economy." However, Bloomberg also notes that there may be some hacking correlation between China's five-year economic plan and its priority sectors, which include clean energy, advanced semiconductors, iT, aerospace, telecommunications, and biotechnology.

From the IT perspective, the best protection is a good defense. Companies of every size should implement a firewall, a reputable antivirus, and anti-malware. They should keep web browsers and business productivity software updated and patched, and possibly even block network access by country IP address if that is feasible. Transitioning to Internet Protocal version 6 (IPv6) may also be an option and is certainly worth investigating, as are newer data encryption options. Unfortunately, once that line of defense is broached, there is little that IT can do after falling victim to a China-based hacker. US intelligence experts believe that the solution lies in putting a clear US policy of retaliation against the Chinese government in the event of a cyber attack.

A's ship Gio Gonzalez to Washington

Oakland, CA (Sportsbooks) - The Oakland Athletics have traded left-handed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for four of their top prospects.

The 26-year-old Gonzalez went 16-12 last season with a 3.12 earned-run average and 197 strikeouts in 202 innings pitched.

Gonzalez, a four-year veteran, has spent his entire big-league career with Oakland and has compiled a 38-32 record with a 3.93 earned-run average and 511 strikeouts in 535 innings pitched.

The A's included pitcher Rob Gilliam in the deal. The 24-year-old right-hander went 12-7 with a 5.04 ERA in 28 starts for Single-A Stockton last year.

In exchange for Gonzalez and Gilliam, the Nationals dealt right-handed pitchers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, catcher Derek Norris and left- handed pitcher Tom Milone.

According to MLB.com, Peacock is the Nationals' No. 2 prospect behind Bryce Harper, with Cole third and Norris fifth.

Milone made five starts for the Nationals last season and went 1-0 with a 3.81 earned-run average and 15 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched.

(AP) ? When Danny Hurley took over at Wagner a year ago, he pledged to turn the woeful Seahawks around with a mixture of toughness and grit, qualities that are synonymous with the family name.

Consider his rebuilding project well ahead of schedule.

Latif Rivers scored all 18 of his points in the second half ? including six free throws in the final minute ? to lead the Seahawks to a stunning 59-54 victory over No. 15 Pittsburgh on Friday night.

"We've got good players, we practice really hard and I think our guys feel like they deserve wins like this and moments like this," Hurley said.

Wagner, which went 5-26 the season before Hurley arrived, certainly played like it.

Controlling the tempo and making Pitt work hard at both ends of the court, the Seahawks (8-3) beat a ranked opponent for the first time since knocking off then-No. 15 Alabama on Nov. 24, 1978.

Pitt (11-2) saw its nine-game winning streak snapped in emphatic fashion. Ashton Gibbs scored 14 points for the Panthers, but Pitt shot 40 percent from the field and turned it over 18 times while losing to a Northeastern Conference opponent for the first time ever.

"It's very big for us," Wagner guard Kenneth Ortiz said. "You know the Big East is one of the biggest conferences. Us being a mid-major, this is something big. Everyone wants to be top-ranked. We wanted to get it, we got our chance and we made the best of it."

The Panthers came in 70-0 all-time against NEC foes, but never led over the game's final 33 minutes.

"It's definitely not the way we want to play," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. "We definitely took a step backwards."

Pitt has been nearly unbeatable in nonconference games since the Petersen Events Center opened in 2002. The Panthers had lost just one non-Big East game in the arena's first nine seasons. Now they have dropped two in the span of five weeks.

Long Beach State raced past Pitt 86-76 on Nov. 16, blistering the Panthers with a dizzying uptempo attack.

Wagner went the opposite way, working the shot clock and spreading the floor while trying to wear down Pitt's depleted backcourt. The Panthers are playing without starting point guard Travon Woodall, who is nursing groin and abdominal injuries.

Gibbs has taken over the majority of the ballhandling duties, and it has worn him down. He missed his first seven shots and finished just 5 of 16 from the field with four turnovers.

"We felt like them not having Travon would be a big advantage for us," Hurley said. "They were kind of laboring getting the ball up the court. Even on possessions where we weren't really rattling them, we wanted them to have a short clock."

The victory also proved a bit bittersweet for Hurley, who twice turned down opportunities to join Dixon's staff at Pitt. Hurley had served as an assistant coach at Rutgers before becoming a prominent high school coach in New Jersey. As appreciative as he was of Dixon's offer, Hurley knew when he got back into the collegiate ranks, he wanted to run his own show.

Along with his brother and assistant coach Bobby ? who starred at Duke 20 years ago ? Hurley has the tiny Staten Island, N.Y. school rapidly rising to respectability thanks to an upgraded roster and newfound confidence.

The Seahawks played fearlessly, not panicking after the Panthers built a 9-2 lead.

Ortiz and Tyler Murray outplayed backcourt counterparts Gibbs and Cameron Wright, with Ortiz getting out in transition to capitalize on sloppy ballhandling by the Panthers.

Gibbs, the preseason Big East Player of the Year, entered the game shooting just 36 percent from the field since Woodall's injury, and missed all seven of his shots in the first half. Ortiz had no such issues, going a perfect 5 of 5 to help Wagner take a 29-25 halftime lead, the first time the Panthers have trailed at the half since losing to Long Beach State in the third game of the season.

And Wagner ? just like the 49ers ? proved it wasn't a fluke.

Rivers shook of a rough first half to score seven quick points as the Seahawks went ahead 44-32. Pitt clamped down defensively but couldn't take advantage at the other end of the court.

Gibbs put together a brief hot streak to get the Panthers back in it, but every time Pitt appeared ready to take control, Wagner would respond with a big shot.

Pitt drew as close as three points twice in the final 36 seconds but couldn't get over the top. Rivers hit six straight free throws down the stretch and the Seahawks poured onto the court in celebration after the program's biggest victory in 33 years.

"I said to the coaches and I'll say to the players to make sure you have your phones charged, because you're going to get a lot of texts and a lot of calls," Hurley said.

Meanwhile, the Panthers search for answers.

The defending Big East regular season champions open conference play at Notre Dame next Tuesday. They hoped to come in on a high. Instead, they're left wondering how to get back on track.

"It's something we can grow from," Pitt forward Lamar Patterson said. "We've got to learn from our mistakes today."

Energy Storms Back from 21-Point Deficit

December 23, 2011 - NBA Development League (D-League) Maine Red Claws
PORTLAND, ME - Maine (3-6) scored a season-high 42 points in the first quarter and 63 in the first half, seemingly destined for an upset win over the league powerhouse Iowa Energy (8-3), only to see the Energy's bench lead the charge to overcome a 21-point deficit. Iowa took home the win over the host Red Claws, 111-102.

The Red Claws opened the game with a quick jumper from Tyc Snow that sparked the Red Claws to a 42-27 first quarter. Maine continued to hold the lead over the Energy until late in the game when the Energy's bench took over the game. When all was said and done, Maine's 21-point lead evaporated, and Iowa picked up their 8th win of the season.

Iowa finished with six players in double figures, including three coming off the bench to lead the late charge. Ben Strong led the way with a team-high 21 while Nick Covington and Darion Anderson added 17 apiece. Nick Murphy had a quiet double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Moses Ehambe and Andrew Drevo rounded out the Energy players in double digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

For Maine, Paul Harris narrowly missed a triple-double for the second consecutive game, finishing the night with 21 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds. Justin Brownlee put together his best performance to date with 23 points and 8 rebounds to take home the Adidas Player of the Game honors. Courtney Pigram continued to add to his point tally, leading all scorers with 27 points. Dominic Calegari pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds in the losing cause.

Maine will look to regroup as the two teams will meet again tomorrow with an early Christmas Eve game at 1 PM.

Snooki sued for $7 million over merchandising deal

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi may soon end up in court -- but not for the usual reasons.

PHOTOS: Snooki's wild summer in Seaside Heights, NJ

The 24-year-old "Jersey Shore" star has been hit with a $7 million counterclaim in her legal battle with licensing company SRG Ventures.

VIDEO: Snooki on her body: "What the hell happened?"

According to The New York Post, Polizzi initially partnered with the company to launch an array of merchandise including school supplies, watches, shoes and lingerie. The pint-sized party girl filed suit in October to end her contract with SRG Ventures, claiming the company didn't fulfill its obligation to secure enough money and develop sufficient branding partnerships.VIDEO: Snooki installs a stripper pole in her house

SRG Ventures' counterclaim alleges Polizzi sabotaged their agreement by negotiating with brands behind the company's back -- a claim Polizzi's lawyer strongly denies. "Ms. Polizzi disputes SRG's version of the facts and looks forward to her day in court," SRG's lawyer Robert J. Hantman says.

ICS Rollout for Sony Ericsson Xperia Phones Starting in March

    Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Sony Ericsson is the latest handset manufacturer to provide more details about its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich rollout plans, and the company said users should expect the first ICS-enabled Sony Ericsson devices in late March and early April 2012.

"Our developers are now busy merging our current Xperia software with the new features in Android 4.0," Sony Ericsson said in a blog post.

The first smartphones to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich will be the Xperia arc S, the Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray.

In late April and early May, the Android 4.0 rollout will continue for the Xperia arc, Xperia Play "PlayStation phone," Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman.

Sony Ericsson said the Ice Cream Sandwich launch will be a "phased roll out over several weeks," so not all users of a particular Xperia model will get the update at the same time. For more details, Sony Ericsson has a lengthy explanation of the upgrade process in a separate blog post.

When ICS is ready, however, Xperia owners will get a notification on their handsets instructing them to download the update over the air via 3G or Wi-Fi. It will also be accessible to those who want to connect their device to the PC.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone was the first device to be released with Ice Cream Sandwich in the U.S.; it made its debut on Verizon Wireless on Dec. 15. For more, see PCMag's full review.

It's been more difficult to nail down exact ICS release dates for other handsets, however. PCMag's Jamie Lendino talked to several handset manufacturers about their ICS rollout plans recently, prompting him to declare that Google's Android Update Alliance Is Already Dead.

For more, see PCMag's full review of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the slideshow below.
